I am sure when IANA and ICANN originally suggested registrations of domains (way back when, that it sounded ridiculous too.
I am sure when Elon suggestion a re-usable rocket and a mars mission within the decade that it sounded ridiculous at the time.

Asteroid mining is real, and it will happen within the decade. There are already planned missions to explore and probe asteroids early in the new year.
Nasa has a mission planned by 2026 to explore a metal asteroid worth 10,000 quadrillion. So, its not really ridiculous.

So, yes, this project sounds ridiculous, but we are trying to bring this vast wealth to all humanity, rather than just a few billionaires who get their first.

Our project is going to focus on:
- Claiming system (via the blockchain)
- legal defense and policy adoption
- space investment (investing in the very companies that will be reaching for the asteroids)
- global good and education.

Nothing fishy going on here.

In a virtual world like the internet the registration system for domain names works well, and by the way, ICANN was started by the Dept of Commerce, most likely trying to find a way to tax and make money for the US Govt.

In a physical world, when China or Russia land on your asteroid and starting mining, what's your recourse?

You are right, what was borne our of the Dept of Commerce as in initiative is now an international, community-driven organization independent of any one government. Exactly what we are striving to be.

The purpose of ASTRCoin and Asteroid Ltd. beyond the ICO and its quirkiness is to build a platform using the Blockchain that creates an indisputable record of the claim, when it was made and by whom. From this it would lead to setup legal defense, government lobbying, and legislation suggestions across multiple countries, much the same way ICANN now functions. Of course this is not without its challenges.

Part of our Blockchain model has a domicile royalty. This provides a mechanism for local governments to be rewarded, based on the claimants locality when a company does actually select and start the mining process. Although there are reports of China mining asteroids for more resources, or China dragging an asteroid around the moon to mine it, we believe that its most likely going to be private well funded companies that get their first rather than any specific country. And as more and more companies realize this potential, the space race to the asteroid will only accelerate the technology that makes it all possible.

In due course it is our intention to work with all companies and nation states that are planing future mining activities and for Asteroid Ltd. to build a platform that is indeed fair for all humankind rather than those with the biggest wallets.

While we are not planning to burn them, we are also not planning to create any more than 100,000,000 for the ecosystem.

There are a number of problems we are trying to solve and the first one is the vast wealth of space and who can claim it. Our biggest goal as Asteroid is to be a global good company and help the vast population have access to space and not just a few billionaires.

It's actually one of the founding ideals behind the BlockClaim system.  The concern right now is that there are a lot of Wealthy indiviuals racing each other to space thinking that the first one there will claim it all for themselves.  We believe we can beat them too it by having a globally adopted system and a unified voice supporting the legitimacy of these claims before they corner the market solely for their benefit.

This project may seem crazy to some but the reality is that it is trying to solve a real world (or universe) problem. Thanks Neo, yes it is unique, but it is also needed. At the moment there is no clear way to claim outer-space resources. Our blockchain project allows all of Human-kind to share in the vast wealth of outer-space, not just the billionaires.
