Encrypted Bitcoin-QT wallet. Before doing so saved wallet in .cvs file. Wrote down password. Month later tried to transfer some Bitcoins but password would not work. Have tried every combination I could think of. Spend a lot of time. 46 Bitcoins in wallet. But since I have the .cvs file with Address and ID I thought I could deposit. My coins show up in blockchain when I enter address. But I cannot deposit them. When I try to deposit at Mt. Gox for example it says :Your private address could not be redeemed (already redeemed?)
What to do?

Did you try to send your Bitcoins from your Blockchain.info wallet to an address in your Mt. Gox wallet, or were you trying to use the "Redeem private key" feature?

Since you've already imported your private key into Blockchain.info, it wouldn't be a good idea to import the same private key into Mt. Gox. One private key should only be attached to one wallet. The better approach would be to transfer your Bitcoins to Mt. Gox, if that's where you want them. The steps for this are:

1. On Mt. Gox, go to Funding Options->Add Funds.
2. In the "Please choose a funding method" drop-down, choose "Bitcoins".
3. Copy the Bitcoin address that's displayed there.
4. On Blockchain.info, go to Send Money. This should take you to "Quick send" by default.
5. Paste the address from your Mt. Gox account into the "To:" blank.
6. Enter the number of Bitcoins you want to transfer in the "BTC:" blank. It's a good idea to send a small test amount first to make sure everything's correct.
7. Click "Send Payment."

Once your test transfer shows up on your Mt. Gox account, you can start again at step 4 to send the rest of your funds to the same address.

Every address has a corresponding private key.

E.g. Bitcoin address is 17n4E4HVyMXxYmfdhRidzRK2YpogGJL235 (you can use this to receive coins)
The private key to this address is 5Jbi67Rco9ZAcvt4PzRipPkgo4qwTWyS3guMcLPzuG8Ew4gGs6j (this is the one you need to redeem at Gox)
Your wallet is a collection of those private keys.

So what can you do?
Start with the following:
- Check if you have written down this private key somewhere
- Write down everything you remember about the password, like the length or that it does contain a certain character.
Do you remember how strong the password is? Maybe you can brute-force it.

Thank you orymh,

Tried as suggested but suggested but got message "no free outputs to spend".

What now?

Regarding comment from Birdy, my password is 16 bits long, very strong. I have written it down and tried many, many variations but no luck.

Assuming Blockchain.info isn't having technical difficulties right now, that message should mean your funds are somehow tied up in other transactions. To figure out the details of what's going on, you can look at the transactions for your address:
1. Log in to Blockchain.info.
2. Copy the address listed under "This is your Bitcoin address."
3. Go to the main Blockchain.info page and paste your address into the "Search" blank, then click Search.

The immediate search results will give you the total available balance for your address, as well as a list of transactions involving your address. If any of the transactions that sent Bitcoins to your address have the red "Unconfirmed transaction!" label on them, then the funds from those transactions aren't available to you yet.

If that's the issue, all you have to do is wait for the transactions to be confirmed, and you'll be able to send your Bitcoins normally.

(It appears the same error message may also mean you don't have enough in your account to send the amount you're trying to send, and cover the transaction fee. If you were trying to send an amount that's significantly less than the total balance of your account, this shouldn't be the problem.)

Thank you for your input.
No, the funds were transferred well over a month ago and there are thousands of confirmations.
It shows 46 bitcoins and the three transactions that delivered them into my Bitcoin-QT wallet. Everything is green.

I can also see my bitcoins in my wallet, just not send them without the passphrase. So I am at a loss what to do. Those coins are about $ 5000!

The address you are entering there, does it start with a 1 or a 5?
private keys start with a 5. If you don't have that, you will have to get the access to your wallet (/find out the password).

.csv is not backup of your wallet. It's just your transaction history. You need a backup of unencrypted wallet.dat, or remember the password to be able to spend the coins.

1. Do you have a pre-encryption backup anywhere?
2. Do you know part of the password? There is a scrypt that tries to brute force the password based on a pattern. Without a close match it will take until after then end of the universe though.

Theres no way to get around it then actually knowing your password. Or bruteforcing it, but that could take weeks, months, depending on how much you of it you remember.

Great, there is a good chance to recover the coins!
Replace the wallet.dat in C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Bitcoin with the old one. (don't delete the one in there, rename it or so to have a backup in case the old one isn't good)
Then start the Bitcoin client.

This should work. If it doesn't start you can try to start bitcoin-qt from the command line with the refresh option:

1. Open cmd
2. Navigate to the program files/Bitcoin directory
3. run: bitcoin-qt -rescan

Good luck Smiley

Thank you for all the replies. Finally got around to trying something different and it worked. Got all 47 coins back.
Used the wallet.dat file that I had renamed with a different name and extension and saved prior to encryption and replaced it with the wallet.dat file in a new instance of Bitcoin-QT on a different Mac.
There it did open and allowed me to transfer the coins....
Why the same thing did not work on the original Mac I still do not know.
