I think I had one of mine die sometime this morning -- it shoes 100% HW error rate at 700mhz. It hashes at like 83.2kh and constantly stops hashing/restarts.

This is a completely different unit than the one I mentioned a few posts ago.

What frequency were you running it before it died?

700mhz, highest I've ever run it was 756mhz.

a cable within the USB plug did lose its connection and moved to the nearby contact - that was a big movement like 1mm .. but caused it to be unusable now.

my fault should have checked better before plugging in my moonlander.

Nice!  Which fans are you going to use?, if you have a link can you add it.  Are you going to use some duct hose ?
I learned from some youtube video that the L3+ fans produce around 250cfm  of airflow and those fans make a hell of noise. But then I read that noise is not coming from the fans but from the air passing through the inside of miner.

I'm currently running the moonlander 2 usb devices connected to PC (Windows 10 OS). I'm planning to switch to raspberry pi 3 to cut down the power consumption, & need few suggestions,

1) What is the best/suggested OS for raspberry pi 3 to better run moonlander 2 devices or to be stable.
2) I'm panning to connect a USB2.0 hub(external powered with each usb port delivering consistent 2A current output) with 20 usb ports (probably connected with 10 moonlander 2 usb devices)
3) Do any of the Operating Systems of raspberry pi 3 has limitations on USB hubs connected to them?

Do anyone of you tried this and anyone of you think switching from PC to raspberry pi 3 is a bad idea?

I switched to Pi recently. Running 3 sticks on NOOBS without issues (at the moment 6 days without interruption) ... but i'm real NOOB when it comes to rasp and linux so can't answer you more questions. Very happy I did that. Now entire setup is behind window (I have double windows in my house) so heat nor noise is issue anymore (original fans were really loud sometimes).

I say go for it.

its only around 20W to be cooled here not 800 like on an antminer

i have one fan that died.. it spins very slowly and makes a horrible rattling noise.. this is the fan that started making noise before i oiled it.

ive since oiled all my fans.. a few of them were completely dry..

i suggest everyone to peel the sticker off and put a drop of oil on the bearing.. let it soak in for a few minutes and run the fan face down for a few.

Be careful.. oil can mix with dust making some sort of paste and block the bearigns completely. Some bearings are designed to run dry (don't know if these are the case).

i really dont think these fans are going to last very long.. i really wish he went with the longer heatsink and put the fan on top. that way when it fails you can just remove it.

I think the OEM fan has no bearings but just a brass bushing so should not be a issue.

Setting Up The ML2 To Auto Run In Detached Screen Using Raspberry pi3

Some might find this useful and possibly it will work as well for you as it does for me on my setup using Raspian (debian) on a Raspberry pi3+ to control the Moonlander 2 USB ASIC Miners.The directories are those that I have renamed and yours will most likely be different so alter the structure accordingly. Also your choice of difficulty and frequency may be different so make changes there as well. This assumes that you have installed BFGminer correctly and any JSON libraries needed and that you can call the program successfully from the command line already.

1.) If you don't already have 'Screen' installed then install it:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install screen

2.) Using 'Putty' navigate to directory 'etc' (cd ./etc)

3.) Command Line: sudo nano rc.local

4.) After the 'fi' and before the 'exit 0' within rc.local paste the following lines (you have to arrow down with keyboard prior to right clicking mouse to paste)

#Run bfgminer as `pi` from the home folder
#in a screen named `moonlander`

sudo su - pi -c "screen -dm -S moonlander /home/pi/bfgminer/bfgminer --scrypt -o stratum+tcp://hash-to-coins.com:3333 -u username.workername -p 1,d=512 -S ALL --set MLD:clock=900"

5.) Using the keyboard to navigate make the required changes to reflect your path, chosen server, your username, difficulty, frequency, etc..

6.) When all has been changed that needs to be, 'CTRL-O' and then 'Enter' to write the changes to file and then 'CTRL-X' to exit the nano editor.

7.) Command Line: ./rc.local to test it out and see if it is able to execute the program in a screen.

8.) If the program executes properly and the miner starts operating then from the command line you can enter: screen -r and that will reattach the screen 'moonlander' to your putty session.

9.) To exit putty without stopping the screen, just close putty using the 'X' on your window. (closing the window using 'Q' or 'CTRL-C' will end the screen process - you don't want to do that.)

10.) You can then bring up a new session of putty and after logging in, from the command line enter: sudo reboot and check if it auto starts the BFGminer once the pi3 restarts.

 

In the command line used above the following are variable:

• moonlander - that is just any arbitrary name used to identify the screen session created.
• /home/pi/bfgminer/ -the path on my particular pi3 setup.
• hash-to-coins.com_3333 - my choice of server to use_
• -u username.workername -p 1,d=512 - you may only have one username or possibly a wallet address - also in place of password on the server I use the 512 is the difficulty. You may not even wish to have a set difficulty or the server may not support it.
• clock=900 - the various core clock speeds vary and yours might be higher or lower depending on how you tuned your device_

 
I will also note that in the 'sudo su - pi -c "screen -dm -S moonlander ' section, the 'sudo' is placed in front of the 'su' command to eliminate the password requirement otherwise everytime it went to boot it would hang waiting on a password that is not coming and then the program would not start. There may very well be a password switch to use in conjunction with the 'su' command but I just went with what worked for me.

I am not sure if you can stack command lines with one instance of BFGminer however you can definitely isolate each instance of BFGminer to one specific device. That is dependent upon being able to run more than one instance. Linux I am fairly certain you can. probably can in Windows too.

If you can, configure each instance isolating the device in the command line

-S ALL --set MLD:clock=600

Instead of -S ALL you would enter the individual device. If you have four devices then you will have dev 0,1,2,3

So

-S 0 --set MLD:clock=600
-S 1 --set MLD:clock=600
-S 2 --set MLD:clock=600
-S 3 --set MLD:clock=600

Then you can set up 4 different workers on a site such as hash-to-coins.com and designate what scrypt coin that particular worker is to mine.

So an example command line for one instance might be such as this:

bfgminer --scrypt -o stratum+tcp://hash-to-coins.com:3333 -u username.workername1 -p 1,d=256 -S 0 --set MLD:clock=600

and another would be:

bfgminer --scrypt -o stratum+tcp://hash-to-coins.com:3333 -u username.workername2 -p 1,d=256 -S 1 --set MLD:clock=600


That might work for you but I will bet someone else knows more about the command line and what is possible without having to run separate instances.

I think you have to put the COM port for each Moonlander into the command line - sure it’s been discussed before

Well I finally got my ball bearing fans in for the stock replacements.

They work well but they are extremely loud compared to the stock sleeve fan.

They are the same type/brand as the stock fan, just ball bearing, direct replacement.

You probably bought one that is really high RPM...these fans can go up to 15k RPM. You only need about 7-10k RPM to properly cool these. Stock fans run around 9-11k.

There's a few mentions of running these from a Raspberry Pi. Would it be possible to run a single miner directly from the Pi's onboard ports, or would a powered hub be required?

Strange issue. I've been mining with FBM2 for about a month now, I got up to 12 and had them running fine, would run them for days without issue. But, recently I will start up bfg, they all will connect and hash, after about 2-4 minutes it will say Pool 0 interrupted and they will stop hashing. If i close bfg and reopen it will do the same thing I have tried almost everything...

I have switched pools, I have tried solomining, i have tried different frequencies, i have tried different computers, i have tried with hub without hub usb 2.0 usb 3.0, starting bfg then adding them 1 by 1 what could the issue be? im using bfg for moonlander 5.4.2.

anyone have any thoughts/ideas?
