I have no doubts this is just incorporating all the things from Google Wave and Buzz.
Function wise they have had the ability to be like Facebook forever. I guess it was a matter of time before Facebook numbers would be dropping and trust in them would go down.
This is curious though as to what Facebook will do now, they plan to be a public company next year I think, so they should be getting on top of this situation right away. Love competition.

Ever hear of facebook? it was limited to schools for a long time. Didn't seem to hurt it's popularity. |

It's not limited to make it popular, it's limited because it's not done yet. They're done with internal testing and are now doing a beta basically with "normal" people. Since they knew the press would get wind of this from anyone in the "beta" they just made the press a part of the beta so it could actually be covered properly. Once they actually get it to launch they've said they don't plan on limiting the number of people that can use it. |

To all prospective buyers: the invites are free and unlimited to hand out by people with current Google+ accounts. You should be able to get them for free or a very nominal amount (read: dumbass above me is asking for too much).
