Most green way to go would be raising gas prices 500% so that logistics around the globe are improved.

My neighbor goes to work , let's say 10km every day, and 10km back. After price increase he will rethink about his workplace.
Also imagine a how many resources are wasted while delivering useless merchandise and supplies around your city: closest way somehow is not cheapest, and that way we have this traffic out of nowhere, people traveling back and forth, while in reality they should not move so much.

Tax transportation skyhigh, and save on resources/money/emissions.

People say "Do we need $10/Gallon gas to get people to stop consumption?" but hey, if you convert the European gas prices to $/Gallon we already pay $10/G!

It isn't about what's being wasted it's about the process itself, if you're having to ration, which is what conversation really is, then you're doing it wrong, the only way you're going to make something that does what environmentalists want is if it's renewable and cheap, anything else is just a temporary measure and pisses all over everyone living standards. Hydrogen Fuel Cells and renewable petroleum are much more realistic options, we're most likely going to have to use a mixture of various fuels rather than just the one out of the ground like we do normally.

Except the little matter where the massive turbine-driven generators in the coal plant are vastly more efficient than the little wee reciprocating engine in your gasoline car, so you're still coming out ahead even under that pessimistic standard.

Also, 62% of the electricity (averaged nationwide) is not coal.

And whenever the utility switches over to a cleaner means of generation, your car switches over to that with no action needed on your part.

BTW, don't assume that the electric motor is 100% efficient -- Tesla claims its motor to be 88%, and that's obviously at the shaft, not rear wheels.  According to wikip, "Steam fossil fuel power stations operating at the critical point have efficiencies in the low 40% range."  That's, obviously, excluding the line, transformer  & charger losses ... making the whole magilla less efficient than a diesel-powered car (40% according to wikip again).

It's much easier to mitigate pollution for a few coal power stations than from a million vehicles.
