Figured I'd start a thread for these.

First, the best resource possible is Sidehack's USB hub thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1779423.0

Things to look for on the hub:
  • Provides at least 1amp per port
  • Has a way to hook up to your Pi/PC (this is sometimes described as  "Sync" not just charging)

Here's my learnings from playing with those that also apply to the Moonlander.

Budget Hub for 3 or fewer Moonlanders

Pluggable USB hub - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L2LK164

These have 3 voltage regulators that are shared by the ports next to each other, so you can only run at max 3 of the Moonlanders. Put one on port 1, port 4, and port 7.

Hub for 3-10 Moonlanders

Sipolar 20 Port - https://www.amazon.com/Sipolar-Industrial-Charger-Refurbish-Cellphone/dp/B01KPOEX9O

This hub can power up to 12 moonlanders, due to the size of the fan. It has two USB 3 ports to connect to your PC or Pi, so be sure you plan that. Some people reported having trouble getting the Pi to recognize it, but if you have this issue, plugging the USB3 from this into a cheap USB hub (like an Amazon basics 4 port USB2 hub) and then that into the Pi works.

Other hub:
Eyeboot 19 Port 40amp - https://www.eyeboot.com/19-port-40a-usb3-hub.html

Hub for 10+ Moonlanders

Eyeboot 49 Port - https://www.amazon.com/Eyeboot-Port-USB-110v-220v/dp/B00JCA4ARS or https://www.eyeboot.com/49-port-usb-hub-60a-power-supply.html

This bad boy can give 1amp to 21 Moonlanders. It is expensive but high quality, and will run a ton of Moonlanders. Note that you need an external ATX power supply for this.

Whoever mines the block which ends up containing your transaction will get its fee.

Eyeboot 49 Port - https://www.amazon.com/Eyeboot-Port-USB-110v-220v/dp/B00JCA4ARS or https://www.eyeboot.com/49-port-usb-hub-60a-power-supply.html

This bad boy can give 1amp to 20+ Moonlanders. It is expensive but high quality, and will run a ton of Moonlanders. Note that you need an external ATX power supply for this.

This makes my brain hurt.

$60 USB stick that makes $3/month.

$165 hub to run them.

20 Sticks = $1200

USB hub = $165

Monthly Profit $60

You are looking at a 2 year ROI if LTC price keeps rising a bunch.

Or For a similar investment you can buy an L3+ and ROI in 4 months

Why would anyone buy this junk?

Stop buying industrial miners, running them at home, and then complaining about the noise.

I have some friends who have ordered a bunch who want to mine, but don't have a space where they can run a full sized industrial miner.

Lets refrain from calling stuff junk when you have no idea how crypto or the community in general works, and said community keeps the price where it is so you can mine with your expensive miners and make profit.

Most people don't have thousands to spend like you, or know nothing about mining and crypto in general to spend said thousands. This is a great way to get into it.

You can thank me for bringing thousands of new people into LTC, and support the price YOU mine at. Think twice before calling any of this junk or stupid.

What have you done to support LTC and the community in general?

I can thank you for profiting on people that dont know better by selling them equipment that has a coin flip chance at best of ever reaching break even? If people want one or two of them so they can pat themselves on the back and say that they are mining thats fine.

I was referring to people that were buying large quantities and trying to run them with a really expensive hub like the one I quoted when making my post. If you are going to invest that kind of money there is literally no reason to spend all that money versus buying a high end miner.

Stop buying industrial miners, running them at home, and then complaining about the noise.

Thanks wavelengthsf, that's really helpful. I actually went with the budget hub you posted instead of another one I was looking at based on this.

And those are not the people buying these, at least not the vast majority. Guess I was an idiot for mining 500 LTC with my junk GPUs for a LOSS in 2012 right Wink

Same goes for the people that bought my original Moonlander that were making .25 LTC a month (under $1 USD in 2016).

Oh wait yea those people made about 10x profit since the original.

For your info, I’m barely making ANY profit from pre-orders on these. I’m more interested in getting the largest number of people possible with the least cost into LTC, and funding Litecoin’s development at the same time.

Once again you have no idea what your talking about, so just go back to mining and selling your LTC the second you get a chance, and be glad there is a market for you to sell (most of your buyers are probably the idiots that bought my original Moonlander Wink

I like the sticks  and I mine a lot.

I have 3 monster hubs from back in the day  and could run 30-45 of these sticks  If I choose to.

I run  4 compac sticks  40gh  on a pool that  pays a large bonus reward if i hit a block  and pays some coine if someone else hits the block.

there are a few ltc pools that do this. so I will have a pc that

mines with  compacs from sidehack

1 of these sticks from jstefanop

1 cpu for monero
1 gpu for monero
1  tiny little x11 miner

the rig won't earn a lot

but  all the coins will be set it and forget it.

in no way  do I expect or care  about profit  for this setup.

I make my money with  25,000 in gpus
and 15,000 in sha256 miners.

but the sticks  are pretty much and endless lotto for me and no power cost due to the earnings the one gpu does.

When I get a chance I will demo the ring mining all of  this .

got 2 of these a few days ago and they are great. Great build with indicator lights plenty of heat sink and even a small tiny fan. These are great for anyone looking to learn about mining altcoins.

I have a few hubs that I'm going to try using (don't have any miners yet), any ideas if these will work:

Belkin F4U041
http://www.belkin.com/uk/p/P-F4U041/
PSU: 5v 4A

Sipolar A200 20 Port USB hub
http://www.sipolar.com/page172.html?product_id=14
PSU: 20v 4.5A

Anker® USB 3.0 9-Port Hub
https://www.anker.com/products/variant/USB-3.0-SuperSpeed-10-Port-Hub-/68ANHUB-B10A
PSU: 12v 4A

I'm not sure if any of these will be any good, think the ports are limited to around 1amp Sad

Anyone comment with any success stories with any of these & Moonlander?

The Sipolar A223 will definitely work. I have 12 moonlanders running on that. Not sure about the A200.

The A223 has 5V 40A, so 2amp per port. Don't think any of these will reliably run more than 2 miners.

ok yep thanks - I can see from the specs:

The Sipolar A223
http://www.sipolar.com/page172.html?product_id=166
Quote: "Rated Output 5V 2100mA"

Where the Sipolar A200:
https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/USB-2-0-20-Port-Industrial-High-Power-Charger-Hub/1938705_32641188575.html
Quote: "Rated Output:5V 650mA"

Oh well - none of them are any good i think Sad

I've seen this one mentioned on this forum (but not sure about Moonlander 2) which i might go for:

Plugable USB3-HUB7BC
https://plugable.com/products/usb3-hub7bc/
PSU: 12V, 5A
Quote from link : "USB over-current protection supporting up to 900mA per port (up to 1.5A for BC 1.2 devices)"

So been thinking about these "pluggable" ones and noticed this comment:

.......
Budget Hub for 3 or fewer Moonlanders
Pluggable USB hub - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L2LK164
These have 3 voltage regulators that are shared by the ports next to each other, so you can only run at max 3 of the Moonlanders. Put one on port 1, port 4, and port 7.
.......

There seems to be two types going (1st one is the one linked above):

PLUGABLE USB 2.0 7-PORT HUB WITH 60W POWER ADAPTER
Model: usb2-hub7bc
https://plugable.com/products/usb2-hub7bc/
Quote from link:
Quote
- Fast Charging only with BC 1.2 compatible devices like Apple iPads and iPhones with lightning connector
- Because only some devices support BC 1.2, check compatibility list below before purchase
- Some of those mobile devices have adopted proprietary mechanisms to draw more power than USB 2.0 was designed to allow, which has caused confusion about charging.  That is being solved by the Battery Charging (BC 1.2) Standard – when both the device and the hub/charger are BC Standard compliant, it can charge at a faster rate (up to 1.5A) in a standard way.
Quote from the FAQ:
Q: Can the hub support 7 devices which charge at the full BC 1.2 CDP 1.5A rate?
A: Yes, the supplied power adapter delivers 12A of available current across all USB ports which leaves us 1.5A left over (7 * 1.5A = 10.5A). Non BC 1.2 devices max out at only 500mA per the USB 2.0 specification leaving ample power for every port to be used at the same time.

USB 3.0 7-PORT CHARGING HUB WITH 60W POWER ADAPTER
Model: usb3-hub7bc
https://plugable.com/products/usb3-hub7bc/
Quote from link:
Quote

So - Has anyone tried to connect 7 moonlander to either of these hubs?  I know they might have space issues but i'm sure a mini USB extension cable like this one could fix that:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-3-0-Angle-90-Degree-Extension-Cable-Male-to-Female-Adapter-Cord-length-20cm/372061915159?hash=item56a09e4817:m:mthDKeekyOy4PZktBWEZgtA

Plus do these Moonlander 2 devices "fool" the hub into thinking that they are a BC 1.2 device:
https://www.maximintegrated.com/en/app-notes/index.mvp/id/5801
if they do - just need to look for a BC 1.2 compatible hub, yes ?

You can only connect 3 moonlanders to the pluggables. They have 3 voltage regulators that limit the amperage to the ports driven by each one. 7 won't work.

ok - thats a shame and a bit naughty if it does (not saying you're wrong) but their web site (for both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0) hubs says:

Sad

Each set of ports can get up 1.5amp, I believe.

Port 1,2
Port 3 ,4
Port 5,6,7

Its been a while since I read the Sidehack USB thread linked in the first post, where they did this testing

ok thanks, i'll work my way though that thread when i have a few hours free Wink

My point still stands though, the manufactuer says:

Quote
...the supplied power adapter delivers 12A of available current across all USB ports which leaves us 1.5A left over (7 * 1.5A = 10.5A).

and if their product doesn't do that then this is bang out order.  I've sent plugable an email and asked this question about both the USB2 and USB3 7 port versions of their hubs (and also sent them a link to this thread / discussion).

I saw/ordered one of the USB 3 7 port versions on ebay going cheap - at least i'll be able to get 3x working for now Smiley
