I just read a news on how MIT Bitcoin Club manage to raise $500K and distribute to all 4,528 students.
That's like $110 worth or  0.245 of Bitcoin (4/29 price)!
It's really cool what MIT Bitcoin enthusiasts are doing within the campus.
My cousin currently attends MIT and he'll get to own his first Bitcoin Smiley

Looking forward to more colleges do this.

All that's going to happen is a massive dump by students.. Yes great initiative... We need more crashes.

Not necessarily. Overall, I think it's a good initiative. This reaches out immediately to 4900+ undergrads. If more universities do this, it could raise bitcoin awareness to the new working generation. Doesn't this sound like a bright future for bitcoin ahead? Just my thought. Smiley

The project not only gives bitcoin out to undergrads, it also educates and helps merchants to accept bitcoin around campus.

This is really clever, and no I don't think there'll be massive dumps. It's MIT.

you pay $500k to promote a product to 4.9k poor college students? what a marvelous idea. at least 8% of them are african americans so nobody can say that bitcoin is only a get rich scheme run by white college kids.

imagine it this way: before, the students who wanted to play around with merchant tools as part of web development projects, needed a creditcard processing service. which was not cheap to sign up to. so students only played around with shopping carts, databases and front-ends. never really learning the payment processing arena.

but now they can make their own payment processors, which are linked to other automated systems like making suppliers get paid automatically when stocks get low ( auto restock scripts ) so that merchants do not have to manually order supplies.

they can make paying salaries, commission, fee's automated.

imagine it, already compiled code where someone can open webstore and have it offer a affiliate/salesmen system that ensures stock is supplied, sales assistants/affiliates get paid, all with just an upload to a webserver.

this is going beyond just evolving shopping cart technology. this is making entire businesses more efficient.

.. or the students will just cash out and buy pizza and beer

The college students will be certainly future potential fans of the bitcoin. MIT did great job to popularize the
cryptocurrency. Hope more university and college participate in similar projects.

We need to target elite institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Who knows, may be someone among the students might become the financial adviser to the POTUS in the future...
