White House Team Is Monitoring Cryptocurrencies, Says Press Secretary

The Trump administration has said it is keeping an eye on cryptocurrencies like bitcoin in the wake of its recent explosive price jumps.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said during a press briefing session on Thursday that bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are "something that is being monitored by our team."

In response to a reporter's question on whether the U.S. government is planning for cryptocurrency regulations, Sanders mentioned that there is no specific announcement on the topic right now. She added that the topic had been brought up in a meeting earlier this week by Tom Bossert, a member of the Homeland Security team.

She continued:

"I know it's something that he's keeping an eye on. And we'll keep you posted when we have anything further on it."

The comments follow remarks by the White House to CoinDesk earlier this year, in which representatives revealed they are exploring blockchain technology as a way to improve U.S. government operations.

Comments made in March by Mark Calabria, chief economist to Vice President Mike Pence, indicated at the time that there is enthusiasm within the Trump White House toward blockchain, hinting that progress toward adoption could be seen in the coming years.

According to NIST and ECRYPT II, the cryptographic algorithms used in Bitcoin are expected to be strong until at least 2030. (After that, it will not be too difficult to transition to different algorithms.)

That's nothing new. It was known that various government agencies had their eyes on BTC for years, especially since the 2013 explosion. The role of the White House is to be on top of things, to know it all. A misinformed president would simply make a fool of himself in public and become laughed at. Since there are crypto supporters among his advisors it were to be expected that they'll bring that matter to the table.

I don't believe it. America will never allow the use of bitcoins. Cryptocurrency usurp the dollar's leading position in the world. Without such a tool, America's economy could collapse. The American debt that they cannot repay. If bitcoin will replace the dollar all Fiat dollars back into the American economy. Imagine the inflation index!

Not discussing the "politics" here.  Just thinking to myself that its a great thing when BTC comes up in public conversation at the White House level.  Where I live there is a "buzz" about cryptocurrency and I hear conversations in coffee shops, etc....  almost daily now.

Even if we assume that the Americans will be able to track all users of bitcoins, they will be powerless to trade with bitcoins. They do not recognize bitcoin as currency. Without this, they can have a claim only to exchange for Fiat. Trade bitcoin, and storing bitcoin, they can't control because it's not in their jurisdiction
