Feedback on small venting strategy?

Hi guys.

First - thanks for your input; I imagine many have traveled this road, and probably on a grander scale!

I've been mining for awhile, started with butterflies, moved into R-Box unit and finally mined enough to buy an S9.  With one S9, I could vent directly into the same room, and the room would never exceed 22-23 degrees celsius.  I pulled the trigger on a second S9, and it quickly got too warm, hovering closer to 27/28 degrees celsius with the HRV running at full capacity with an intake in the same room.  So began the march toward ventilation.

I bought:

• two little 3d printed adapters that allow you to connect dryer hose to the S9's exhaust off eBay
• a run of insulated 6 inch pipe
• a series of 4 inch wyes, to accept S9 exhaust
• a 6 inch duct silencer https://www.growlights.ca/6-inline-fan-noise-muffler-air-duct-silencer.html
• a S-Line inline duct fan http://vortexpowerfans.com/s600

S9 Exhaust --> 4 inch Wyes --> 6 Inch increaser --> 6 inch duct --> Inline duct fan -->  6 inch duct --> Silencer --> Merge with duct that leads to upper floor in the home (which was typically cold in the winter)

After running for about 45 minutes, the temps on the hash boards seemed decent, running between 72 and 80 deg.  The ambient temp (intake) was at 22 celsius.  There was this smell developing though, where it smelled like hot plastic.  Quick trip back downstairs, disconnected everything, and the fan was responsible.  Checking the engineering specs, it has a max tolerance of 60 Celsius.  I removed it from the equation, and am now doing:

S9 Exhaust --> 4 inch Wyes --> 6 Inch increaser --> 6 inch duct --> Silencer --> Merge with duct that leads to upper floor in the home

I am still getting a good amount of heat, and without the fan, the board temps are between 75 and 86. Fan speed around 6,100.


I'm wondering:

• These board temps are standard?  Haven't much paid attention to them in the past
• Anyone run a similar setup for a fair duration?  Worried now, that the little dryer hose connectors are messing with 'something (just being paranoid)

Would lowering frequency allow me to reduce temp?

Your board temps are fine, as long as they stay under 100c you have nothing to worry about.

Unless you have older S9s you cant reduce the frequency anymore. Yes they would output less heat. Think of an antminer as a space heater. It is 1400w by default so its a 1400w space heater. If you can knock the power down to 1000w, its  a 1000w space heater etc.

Sure am getting lots of heat out of these units.  Soon we'll be measuring heat in BTCs instead of BTUs!

I have been working the same issue for a couple of days.
I have 2 new T9's . I would like to move the heat from one of them into the house for now, and cut the noise.

What works -
Don't do anything. Mining room gets to 100f. Not really a problem. Rigs run 90-96c. Living space too cold with door closed but noise tolerable. Leave the door open house heats up, but noise!

What doesn't -
I started with the 4" adapters on the exhaust. I ran 4" flex house from each to a T then down 4" flex to a register. Fail. Temps too high and they shut down.
Took one out of the equation. Works but temps over 100c.
Set the other with 4" intake from outside. Works but again around 100.

Currently running 4" exhaust to 6" flex. Temps 84 to 94c. Progress. Off to Home Depot for 6" diameter register box! Hoping for not too much noise. Might need one of these

Those temps seem pretty normal.

I've got a few miners setup with similar ducting, although I would stick to 5 or 6" connectors.  Bringing things down to 4" has in my experience increased temperatures and caused additional stress on the fans, except for on L3+ units, which give off much less heat than an S9.

Lowering frequency will definitely reduce power consumption and thus heat production.

Stop using 4" anything, it's too small and causes a restriction resulting in hotter temps.

Check out https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2796117.0 keep in mind I'm not trying to shill the adapter my friend made, heck you can just slide the 6" duct over the miner fans if you want. But the main take away is for you to get rid of the 4" stuff and personally, I'd go not smaller than 6". I've got my lava spewing M3s venting out via 6" duct and so far so good.

If you can not direct vent the fans into some form of hot aisle, I would highly suggest you follow the above advise and use 6".  You could alway make adapters for the fans out of stryro or double thickness drywall.
