Hi all, I created this site a month ago: http://www.getblockchain.com/It helps new users to quickly get started with Bitcoin by letting them download the blockchain via HTTP, instead of waiting for hours to let the official client download the blocks. The blockchain comes in the form of a ZIP archive of all the files you would find in ~/.bitcoin, except for the wallet.dat and bitcoin.conf. Just extract the ZIP file and copy the contents over to your ~/.bitcoin directory, and you're good to go. Download accelerators work. Please donate to support this project. Just curious... a block chain alone could never really be "tampered" with right? I mean if it was anything other than the official block chain, the client wouldn't recognize anything... right?

No, there's a lot an attacker could do. They could give you a gigantic chain that isn't really valid, and then feed you fake transactions, for example. |

No, there's a lot an attacker could do. They could give you a gigantic chain that isn't really valid, and then feed you fake transactions, for example. If you want to determine if the blockchain from this website is valid, I suggest that you use it to transfer a small amount of BTC, and check blockexplorer.com to see if the transaction has occurred. It would be even better if the said BTC has a long history, so in theory, it would mean that more blocks can be deemed valid. Would it be useful to compare whether the genesis blocks are the same, as an additional verification method? |

Maybe it would be a good idea to provide the chain as a torrent download. The process of creating a new torrent file every day/week could be automated, so users can always pick the most current one while previous chains phase out after a week or so. That way traffic will be spread across the seedbox and other users, what should increase the download speed even more. Other mirrors could easily join in too then.

What about blockexplorer, or another trusted site md5-ing the blockchain after every block, saving that information on each block page, then the getblockchain.com site can say what block their download is updated to, and a user can download it and check the md5 against the blockchain md5 for the same block number.

In my humble opinion you should mirror: http://bitcoin.bluematt.me/bitcoin-nightly/blockchain-nightly/It's from a trusted developer. Then people can verify md5 etc against his and if it becomes popular we won't overload his server. |
