Custom Masternode Coin Development

I wanted to create a custom masternode coin and this would be to run only on testnet for learning and development purposes. Can you guys please guide me with some resources of how to start, best practices.

Would be happy to start cloning the Dash or other existing masternode coin. But my ultimate goal is to create one that which resolves some major real time issues in the future.
