Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

Updated on my hubs

I now have 3 hubs operational with 23 miners in total, 18 on my PC, 5 on my RasPi.

Power consumption of Raspi + hubs + miners + PSU less what is being leeched from the PC is 40W (or so my Watt Meter tells me, but I don't consider it that accurate...)

Hubs US$9.50 each (DX Bulk price FTW)
PSU US $34 (not from DX, sourced
DC plugs and cable US$5
Not burning my fingers soldering US$priceless

Once I have four hubs going, that's a total of $77 for 36 ports, or $2.14 per port - though I am tempted to limit the total used to ~32 to not stress the PSU (17A including the RasPi, out of 20A max), so maybe $2.41 per port.

Improvements to make - ~6A polyswitches for each hub (10 for $4 on ebay...)(the hubs have no over-current protection!), convert some more of my 30cm USB extension cables to power isolation cables, power the RasPi directly from the PSU, not from a hub.

Pics:
Hubs, Duct, PSU, RasPI.  The black power brick is providing the 12V for the Fans.  The PSU is now running very warm to the touch (still far cooler that an USB Erupter) with the extra 5 miners and RasPi.  Is was only warm before add that extra load.

miners all cosy in the duct.

I have tried and using [ Monoprice 12-port USB 2.0 Hub w/3.5A AC Adapter ] in my setup I'm running 7 block erupters on it nicely and due to the nice round shape there is plenty of breathing room between all of the erupters for heat dissipation.

Verifying that the 13 port Juiced Hub is only 3000mA.

And for the curious, verifying that you can do side-by-side on the horizontal spacing.

Would you mind providing more information on the DC barrel plugs and where you got them?

That is great to hear.  Do you have it running on a RPi?

I am thinking of grabbing a bunch of these:

http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/DISTRIBUTED-BY-MCM-CK-0027G-/83-11765

They are available from a local store for $6.75, and have a 3.5A power supply ( I physically looked in the box).  Due to the configuration, I only think 6 ports would be usable though.  However, that is pushing $1/port!

Out of curiosity, what is the best place to buy Raspberries?
I found one here for $43:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Raspberry-Pi-2-0-Model-B-512MB-Version-Element-14-Linux-System-Board-/290946215548?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43bdbeee7c

Is it a good buy?
it's not a bad price for the R-Pi circuit board alone, but have look at eBay link below for an R-Pi with Minepeon...
EDIT. forgot the link http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Raspberry-Pi-Bitcoin-Mining-Host-Preprogrammed-/261257041142   Tongue
which includes the following:

    1 - Raspberry Pi Model B Revision 2.0 (512MB)
    1 - Clear ABS Case
1 - Motorola USB Wall Adapter
1 - 4GB Samsung SDHC 4GB SD Memory Card Class 4 -Preloaded with MinePeon
    1 - Basic Instruction Manual

you could score the R-Pi above at a good price, it would save some time and you can still try your own setup on another sd card.
usually kits with parts above go for around $80 - $90
1 day 6 hours till auction ends from now.

I already ordered one from a local on-line shop, should be delivered tomorrow. The price for started kit was ~$100, including Raspberry Pi Model B Revision 2.0 board, 16GB SDHC, micro-USB AC adapter, HDMI cable and case. I think I'll manage to install MinePeon using the guide you referenced before. I am still waiting for Canary to send the miners, so I'll have ample time to play with the RPi.

That eBay link will surely come handy for others.

Is there any cheaper way then powered hubs?  Can you get a powered usb 3.0 pci-e card that uses sata power or other power, then use regular hubs on it?

Just was wondering.  Was not sure how much power a sata usb 3.0 powered pci-e card would have for BE's to run.

I have one PCI-E card in the table. However, you'd still need powered hubs, if you want to run se more than 4-5 miners off it.

any suggestions to replace Anker hubs since they're currently not listed on Amazon? The copycats are more expensive and seem to have less ports working.

You have Anker 9-porters. I removed the 10-porter links, save for the German Amazon - they still have 2 in stock Wink

I have tried and using [ Monoprice 12-port USB 2.0 Hub w/3.5A AC Adapter ] in my setup I'm running 7 block erupters on it nicely and due to the nice round shape there is plenty of breathing room between all of the erupters for heat dissipation.

Monoprice 12-port USB 2.0 Hub w/3.5A AC Adapter

Added it to the table. It looks like a variation of a 24-porter, which was already listed. This 12-porter seems to have one of the lowest prices per port.

what would be cool would be if these had fold out male connecters in the bottom so that you could stack them.

Would you mind providing more information on the DC barrel plugs and where you got them?

They are 2.5mm x 5.5mm DC Barrel plugs, the "short reach" or 9mm long plug .  I got them from a local electronics retailer (Surplustronics), which unless you are in Auckland, NZ, won't be much use to you :|

The wire I used is "0.33mm^2", I would have used 0.5mm^2 if the had it in stock, though.

UPDATE: These didn't show signs of issues at first but I have since discovered that only 6 devices can be on these at once otherwise they stop being able to communicate with your miner properly.

Just dropping an update..   running on an XP can be a real challenge since most old rigs running XP are OLD MOBOS that trip all over newfangled USBs

The Orico I just got is very solid but I was getting the same wack-a-mole issue with all my other hubs.  Mainly the com ports SOMETIMES register to a usbee and sometimes not. And it is maddening.. here is my hell:

Added a new USB 3.0 PCI cards with 4 +1 ports.
Any 3.0 hub I plug into it, still shows up as a USB 2.0 in device manager (probably need to update mobo firmware.. ugg)
If I plug all 8 of my USBees into the Orico, it looks great!  But only like 4 or 5 will show up in the com ports and one will show error.
If I plug one by one in, weird stuff happens.  I get one good.. etc..   but when I get one in error, it will go from say 3 good to 2 good and 1 bad even though 4 plugged in!!!! terrible!!!

So after lots and lots of shuffling, I was able to get 4 in the Orico and 4 in the other hub all hasing away with the ModMiner.

yes the ModMiner is the main reason I am still using that rig since it plugs into the powersupply real easy and loves bfgminer which is happy to hash everything once my mobo accepts them.

Not sure what I will do once I get two K16's and four more USBees...   maybe get a RasPI for the USBeees and just have the XP rig for the ModMIner and K16s

I wouldn't get my hopes up with that one. They are all over ebay for cheap. I have seen specs on it stating 1Amp total. Also, the specs at your link don't compute. 2.5Amp cannot provide 500mA to 7 ports.

I guess for $6.75 it wouldn't hurt to give it a try though-maybe yours comes with a different AC adapter.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/161054576343

http://www.ebay.com/itm/160691080418

Output: DC 5V 1000mA
Plug standard: US/UK/EU (choose the suitable adapter as you like)
Operation Systems: Windows Vista, Windows XP, ME, 2000, 98, Linux 9 and Mac OS 10.2 or above
Working humidity: 10% - 90%
Working voltage: 5V
Working current: 500mA

so the black orico 10 port usb 3 hubs from the aliexpress website seem to be arriving with 3A power cords instead of 4A as listed on their product description. but i ordered on july 30th and it arrived today from hong kong.. so thats pretty fast... i bought 2, and have 9 BE's in each one running fine so far...

do you have a link to the one you purchased? i may want to give one a try

Link 2 in the OP table. DopeLabs, the white one is actually cheaper.
Don't know if I should update the table with 3A info. Was it a delivery error or they consistently supply lower-powered AC adapters? Anyone else with Orico experience?

the RPi uses 5 watts of power and compared to even an efficient laptop it's half the power.
they're not expensive and easy to setup, I used this guide to get me up and running...  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=251675.0

Is it a good buy?

i ordered a white one from the amazon website and it came with the proper 4A power cord... mining 9 on the 3A, and 10 on the 4A, been fine for the last 24 hours.

Yeah, this only powers 2 miners! I have one and hate it. I hope you did not buy any of these yet.
