Hey all,

I just started bitcoin mining yesterday with GUIMiner.  I currently am a member of Slush's pool, and for some reason all of my Bitcoins will not change from being unconfirmed.  I have generated 0.038 in Bitcoins at the moment, but, as I said before, they are remaining uncorfimed.  Do they normally take this long to confirm, or is there a problem?

Here's my setup if that helps in any way:
CPU: Intel i5-2500 @ 4.0GHz (Turbo Up to 4.4GHz)
Motherboard MSI P67A-GD55 LGA 1155
GPU: Gigabyte Nvidia GTX 560 Ti SOC
RAM: G.Skill 4GB DDR3 1333MHz
PSU: Corsair 700W
HDD: Western Digital 7200RPM 750GB
Case: Antec 1200 V3
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
Monitor Res: 1440x900

Confirmations do sometimes take a while.  I'd suggest switching to mtred.com, I just switched from mining.bitcoin.cz yesterday and really like mtred.com a lot better.

If I switch now with all of these uncofirmed Bitcoins, will they not be added to my account?

They require 100 confirmations, until then they will be unconfirmed.

Be patient and wait  Cheesy

Ok, thanks!  But is Mt. Red really superior to Slush?

 Cheesy

never happened to me

but it's a number so small that cannot be displayed using the number of 0 that the website can use, so well the website system translate it in scientific notation

Mine some more and it will become a normal number  Cheesy

In my experience, it takes about 24 hours for them to be confirmed. I say that because I mine about 0.3 BTC per day and there's usually about 0.3BTC unconfirmed when I get paid out at 0.3.

yeh confirmations can take a while.

about the confirmations, how does that work? do they take hash power out of the pool to confirm these?

so do we actually lose a tiny bit of overhead by being in a pool?

My understanding of this (and I'm no expert yet, by far) is that Confirmations occur in all nodes of the bitcoin P2P.  Nodes meaning anyone actively running the bitcoin.org wallet app.  So just by leaving a wallet app running on one of your computers is contributing to processing of Confirmations of transactions within the network.  So yes, they take power/resources to occur, but not from the mining pools resources (other than their P2P connection to the network itself).  When you run just a miner that's contributing to a pool, those calculations are only to mine more coins, and not to process Confirmations of transactions.

Many pools do take a cut of the profits as operating costs.  Typically they'll take like 1 coin of every block of 50 coins generated.  However, mtred.com is a "free" pool in that they allow you specify what amount, if any, that you'd like to donate back to them for pool operating costs.  Anyone operating a free pool is basically betting on the long-term success of bitcoins and that they'll end up making money back by way of Transaction Fees that people may opt to include when sending transactions of coins that were originally minted through the pool.

No lol

Confirmations are just the blocks created AFTER the one that gave you these bitcoins

So if the pool now find a block and your share of the reward is 0.5bitcoin well, you have to wait until 100 more blocks are found (by all bitcoin, not the pool) before these bitcoins become Confirmed.

It's just a safety measure that slush use to make sure that when people move the bitcoins to their wallet, these bitcoins really exist.
