Hi there,

I started my crypto journey a couple of months ago and signed up with Kraken to buy my first BTC. Now I'm getting into a few altcoins but Kraken is almost always down!!

What other exchanges are there that are
1) trustworthy
2) Propose a EUR/BTC pairing
3) Offer SEPA deposits and withdrawals
4) Actually stay online most of the time
5) Good customer service

The variety of coins available on the exchange is a bonus, not a prerequisite.

Am I better off wishing for a unicorn for Christmas??

Try Bistamp, it's a reputable exchange with a decent volume, and rarely see complaints about them (once only).. You can use SEPA there and have not heard about downtime like Kraken. I can't comment on their support as I never needed it. But You won't find a lot of coins to trade there.

Another is BL3P.eu I never used it so I won't comment

If you are from european country than you can buy sell bitcoin, ethereum, dash and litecoin from bitpanda as they support sepa deposits and also process sepa withdrawals within a day.

Coinbase also supports european countries. For altcoin trading you can use poloniex, hitbtc etc (they don't offer fiat deposits, only USDT pairs)

Thank you for all your suggestions! I hope I'll be able to move my coins over easily - I see that people have been complaining about making withdrawals from Kraken lately!

I will also recommend bitstamp. They did have brief downtime during the last bitcoin price spike, but well - who did not?
My interaction with support was mostly about KYC/AML and it was pretty smooth.
Nice bonus - they do not charge for crypto withdrawals.

Hi there,

I started my crypto journey a couple of months ago and signed up with Kraken to buy my first BTC. Now I'm getting into a few altcoins but Kraken is almost always down!!

Kraken's infrastructure performs horribly under load. The CEO admitted as much just last month. He said there is a major update coming this month that will mitigate all the downtime, but I'm not holding my breath. Undecided

If you insist on BTC/EUR, the most reputable and trustworthy option is GDAX. It is not incredibly liquid for high volume traders because they segregate the USD and EUR liquidity pools -- only European and UK traders can use the EUR markets. The BTC/EUR market had ~9000 BTC volume yesterday. SEPA is available. One of the upsides of GDAX is that right now, they still have 0% fee on limit orders.

I would say that all exchanges are facing performance issues with the current volume and volatility, though. GDAX is no exception, but they are far superior to Kraken.

The variety of coins available on the exchange is a bonus, not a prerequisite.

Unfortunately, Kraken definitely has GDAX beat here. Only BTC, ETH and LTC are currently available. However, it's pretty obvious that they are in the process of adding new coin markets.

I've heard about this update in august and it never came, so I had to leave kraken.

i'm not sure which update that refers to exactly, but i recall they were removing some lower volume markets around that time. i don't think there was a major overhaul to the infrastructure/trading engine at that time, though.

kraken's CEO announced the site upgrade just a couple weeks ago, saying that the improvements would be rolled out during the first week of december. i guess it hasn't happened yet?

all of the exchanges have their drawbacks. i'd recommend bitstamp -- trustworthy, SEPA transfers, more reliable than kraken and coinbase, good customer service. however, they convert your EUR deposits to USD to establish more liquidity in the BTCUSD market. they don't have that many coins, but they do offer LTC, ETH, XRP, BCH in addition to BTC.

Bitpanda.com provides deposits and withdrawals BTC/EUR via SEPA. They paid out my BTC on next working day. The fees are fair in my opinion and they are really fast. I can't say anything about customer support because I didn't need it yet. The company is from Austria. Maybe Bitpanda could also be a good alternative to you for Kraken. For buying little anounts of BTC you could also use ATM. There are several Bitcoin ATM in Europe for example in Austria, Switzerland and Poland.
