There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, which will follow the rules of the network no matter what miners do. Even if every miner decided to create 1000 bitcoins per block, full nodes would stick to the rules and reject those blocks.

Iota was blasted in the news so much prior to it’s Microsoft partnership that it makes one wonder if this announcement of the partnership is going to take a lot longer than anyone could speculate. The price yo-yo’ed a bit and is hovering well now, but today I heard and agree with your comment that investors might be in for a longer haul on this one than expected. Unsure as to the reasons behind the delay, I can only imagine that Microsoft corporation will have to ensure proper steps are taken legally prior to acting out anything concrete with iota...
