I have seen several btc addresses with peoples names. How do they generate them?

You use your computers processing power to generate the prefix. The more characters you want to be unique will take more time. As long as you have the processing power then you should be able to get a 4/5 character prefix. I would suggest to only do this yourself and not hire anyone else to do it for you because of the issue with private keys and trusting them with it.

I used VanityGen, didnt know that bitcoin-qt had that functionality.

There was also a site that I used (only for playing) that would generate them for you. It used two part addresses, and bitaddress.org 's vanity address feature. Anything over 7 characters, case sensitive was either massively expensive or unlikely to ever be found.

the other problem you'll have is that you cant have certain characters in an address. The uppercase letter "O", uppercase letter "I", lowercase letter "l", and the number "0" are never used to prevent visual ambiguity.

Won't that make it a little too unanonymous though? Yeah you'll have yours more personalized and even easier to remember so you won't have to copy it everytime but i think randomness is what makes btc addresses more secure.

That makes total sense as those characters can easily be mistaken.

It does however I dont see the risk being any higher than having an ordinary address, because as soon as anyone knows your public address, they will be able to trace your transactions.

Depends what you want as a prefix. If it has your username then it will be linked with the username, but nothing else. If you use something like 1Bitcoin then it isn't effecting anything. If you are post any address with your username then it instantly gets linked with your account anyway. Adding a prefix and then posting it here on the forums isn't going to make a difference.
