how to recover litecoin sent to bitcoin address

well first off im a newb. I recently purchased a nano s and idiotically attempted to transfer my litecoin from coinbase to my ledger bitcoin wallet address. transaction was listed as complete with several confirmations but coins never arrived in either bitcoin or litecoin wallets on the ledger. what steps can i take to recover the litecon. i have already contacted ledger and coinbase support a week ago but havent recieved a reply. any help would be greatly appreciated. your humble friend

I don't think you will be able to recover it. Even though you have the private keys, it is for a slightly different wallet format (LTC vs BTC format).

No, you will be able to get recover those fund once you get the private key of the address where you send the LTC to a bitcoin address. As what I mentioned on my last post with the same problem as this. You can use the electrum wallet for litecoin and import the private keys of the BTC there then try to move the LTC on that private key.

The issue is that a "3" address is a P2SH address... so it may have multiple private keys if it is a MultiSig (and not a SegWit address)... Which will make importing it all into Electrum a bit difficult...

The simplest explanation is that you need to recreate the Bitcoin address, but on the Litecoin network (ie. using the same private keys as the Bitcoin address).

The only way to do this, is by using private keys. So you need to export private keys for the Bitcoin address that you sent the LTC to, and then import these private keys into a Litecoin wallet. This should (in theory) recreate the address on Litecoin, and show you the LTC that you sent.

It can be complicated depending on the type of Bitcoin address that you sent to... If it was a "SegWit" address, it isn't too difficult as they only have one private key. If it was a "MultiSig" address, that complicates matters as they have multiple private keys.

Looks like you have the same scenario as OP. The solution is the same:

• Find the private key of the Bitcoin Address
• Open Electrum-LTC (https://electrum-ltc.org)
• Import the private key into a new LTC wallet
• If your funds don't show up, try importing the private key as a different address type until found

If you sent to a custodial bitcoin wallet (like an exchange, gambling site or marketplace) that does not give you access to the private keys, you will most likely be unable to recover this LTC. If you sent it to a desktop/mobile or web wallet where you can access the private keys (or the seed/seed mnemonic) then there is a good chance you can recover the LTC.

I assume the BTC address started with a 3? Was this a SegWit wallet... or was it a MultiSig? Which wallet did you accidentally send the LTC to? Was it in a wallet you personally control and have access to the private keys (ie. desktop or webwallet) or does it belong to an exchange/website?

since Electrum was mentioned above, i have to say there is no option to import a single multi-signature (private keys and redeem script) into Electrum. your only option is if the address was derived from master keys and you import those in Electrum.
if your address starting with 3 was a multi sig then your only option is to use the core wallet.

From where I sit...Your situation resembles  that of   Forsyth Jones case described him over  there.
Khaos77 has proposed   how to solve that . Hope some of his instructions could help you.

If you have access to the private seed of the Bitcoin Wallet that received the Litecoin, you can generate all the addresses and private keys here https://iancoleman.io/bip39/

You'll basically enter the private 12-24 word seed there and set the coin to Bitcoin.

Then scroll down and look for the address that received the LTC. Reveal the private key on the right and you can then import the funds that are stuck on the BTC Wallet address back into a Litecoin wallet by scanning the private key bar code or entering the private key text into a wallet that supports importing of private keys.

Something like Edge Wallet would work or any non-custodial wallet where you can import private keys would work as well.

After doing that, it's probably wise to make a completely new wallet as the Bitcoin wallet has had the private seed exposed by entering it.

I'd rather suggest the OP to create a new Ledger seed, move all his funds to the new addresses and then start the recovery process of his LTC.

Don't risk all the funds you're holding on Ledger to find your LTC. Your PC might be infected or, even if it's not, entering the seed anywhere except on your Ledger implies a big risk.

After safely moving your funds, go to a website like the one included in the post above me and find your Bitcoin private keys off your Ledger Nano S seed. You have to import them into a wallet after you've found them, but follow the other posts - here I'm not an expert. What I'm willing to say is just make sure your other funds are 100% safe before entering the seed or a private key anywhere.
