..DAG size will continue to increase which means 4GB cards will not be able to mine ethereum after a certain period..

Is that really true? I mean the ETH DAG is bigger than 2GB now but I never felt that! Here are 2 case studies:

1. Seven months back I was new to mining ETH so I started with MinerGate as it was the easiest to start with. At the first day of my mining I noticed that after a full night (around 7 hours) of mining I spent only around 50 MB of data! Yeah, the mining started and I earned some ETH too! So clearly I mined without even downloading the full DAG. (Maybe a DAG Epoch?)
Interestingly enough, I even mined eth with MG on my laptop that has maybe 256 MB of graphics card or less when the DAG was around 2GB!! How was that possible?

2. Same thing happened when a month later I first started to mine with Claymore on Nanopool. Just few MB used per day. Till date I use Claymore on NP 24/7 and never seen the miner to download the full DAG.

So do we really need a card with memory size bigger than that of the DAG?
I guess that might be true with solo mining which I didn't waste my time trying. Enlighten me... Smiley

The DAG size wont exceed 4GB til mid to late 2020 or early 2021. By the time that comes around there will be more efficient/better cards to mine Ethereum so personally my opinion is if you are buying the cards just to mine ETH buy the cheapest 4GB 580's you can find.

Usually higher memory gives better hashrate. However, what I was trying to say is it is possible to mine ether with cards that has 1 GB or even less memory size regardless of how big is the DAG.

Explained above already, you cant mine ETH with 2GB VRAM or less.

Bitcoin mining is now a specialized and very risky industry, just like gold mining. Amateur miners are unlikely to make much money, and may even lose money. Bitcoin is much more than just mining, though!

The point of 8GB over 4GB is that you will be able to resell these at a higher price. i.e. they will keep their resale value more than 4GB.

If resale value doesn't matter to you, then yes buy whatever you want.  Hashrates don't depend on the size of memory.  They depend on the overclockability of it.

Hello everybody. I have a Sapphire RX 580 4Gb, with modded BIOS (including memory timings) and overclocked until instability (1050/2020). It run under windows 10 with mining drivers, and Im having arround 25,5 Mh/s. I tried a lot of things trying to reach the "oficial" 30Mh/s that these cards are supposed to make. I even change my card for another one, but the hashes remain the same. After reading the experiences of several people with my same card and same hashes, i realized that 25 Mh/s are pretty OK for this card.

Now im thinking about building a dedicated mining rig with six Sapphire RX 580, and i wonder if the 8Gb version will reach more easily these "oficial" 30Mh/s

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Higher hashrate depends on the memory manufacturer. Samsung best of all, Hynix/Elpida worse, Micron very bad. A good memory can keep the frequency of 2100+ which has a positive impact on hashrate.
When choosing a card should be based on the memory manufacturer.
This is not a guarantee of high hashrate, but as close as possible to him.

I'm hitting 31mh/s on a Rx570 with Micron memory

As others have said there is not a huge difference between the 4Gb models and 8Gb. The Sapphire brands tend to reach 30-31 much easier than the other brands regardless of memory type in my experience.

1. Win10 does not require any special mining drivers. Just download new from site.
2. You have to turn on compute in drivers option.
3. You have to use rigth command in bat file, for solo mining. -asm 2 parameter is required for Claymoor's miner.
4. GPU freq. must be 1150-1200 mhz, memory 2k+ (depends on memory manufacturer)
I have 29.6 mh/s from my RX574 (1174/2020).
You should include the bios mod because it has a lot of influence to increase the hashrate of rx 580 and it should be hashing around 29.5-31.5 mh/s
And i think even its 8gb or hynix memory type it should hashing at least  29 mh/s
And not all driver woks honestly there are driver that honestly not giving you a good hashing rate..  blockchain driver or crimson relive drive would be good  alternative or test every driver lower or latest.. and test if your hashrate increase..

There is almost no difference between 4GB and 8GB performance. My 4gb RX580 and RX570 cards with Elpida memory are doing 31-32.5Mh/s with good bios mods. It comes down to the quality on that specific card, some i can run at 2170MHz while others i can only run at 2080Mhz. At the same moment, my 8GB RX580 cards with Samsung memory only does about 30.5 to 31Mhs.

There are huge differences in memory types... Some of the Sapphire with 24MJ can do more than 32MH/s in dual, while 24AJ has problem reach 31MH/s or at least with my timings...  On XMR I was able to tweak both of them more and the difference is lower.

BTW few days ago I've got bios with H5GQ4H24AJ, I've never seen this type before, but it seems that it likes same timing as H5GQ8H24MJ and it does 31+MH/s.

There is almost no difference between 4GB and 8GB performance. My 4gb RX580 and RX570 cards with Elpida memory are doing 31-32.5Mh/s with good bios mods. It pretty much depends on exact Samsung type, classical FB is great if you don't have some bad one on the other hand FC and FE are terrible, I need to play with them a lot.

Not too different
Rx 580 4G : 27 MHs
Rx 580 8G : 30 MHs
For ethash algo With bios mod

Everything depends on memory type of the card, it's a lottery every time, same brand, same reference could have a different memory and that fucks everything.

I've got MSI RX470'S and 480's 4gb gaming x that easily hit 30mh/s all day everyday so naturally I bought that brand and reference for the RX580's and they only get 27.7mh max while consuming more energy. So 10% less hashrate and probably consumes 10-20% more electricity after undervolting.

In my experience with rx480s, with Samsung memory, between 4gb and 8gb the 4gb perform better. I don't know much about this so bear with me, but the 4gb's out of the box usually hash 24.5 at 1750mhz, while the 8gbs hash the same at 2000mhz. With bios mod and overclocking the 4's to 2100 usually achieves 30mhs but for the 8's they have to go to 2150 or higher to get 30mhs.

The problem is very few of the 8's that I have are stable at 2150mhz and I can only run the majority of them at 2050mhz whereas every single 1 of the 4gbs hit that and more so due to the price difference and the cards performing at exactly the same hashrate I'm only buying 4's from now on.

To answer your question, I'd go the 4's but everything depends on memory type. If you get elpida you'll only get 27.7mh after bios mod and overclocking.

that is cheaper then take it, do not see any difference at all, the most important thing is to quickly repel your money
