I have a Dying computer.  It won't stay on. I bought the exact same computer on  ebay used.  if I change out hard disk drive from my dying computer will that carry my wallets With Coins in then to the ebay computer?
I tried a thumb drve or memory stick. not sure what it is called.  But it tore all wallets to pieces. tried to burn them to dvd or cd disk. put disk in a laptop I had some wallets but not all of them and no coins in them. I could not see the the coins anyway. wallets also needed to re sync.

Do I need to ground my body to computer before removing hard disk drive?

     Thank You For Your Help!!!
According to NIST and ECRYPT II, the cryptographic algorithms used in Bitcoin are expected to be strong until at least 2030. (After that, it will not be too difficult to transition to different algorithms.)

Yes. All your data is stored on your hard disk. Unless of course your hard disk itself is dying, in that case it's gone.[/quote]

Officially: yes. In practice: it's most likely okay not to.

If you have millions of (alt)coins, you need to back them up wallet for wallet. It sounds like you got into something when it was cheap, without fully understanding what you're doing.

Let's start from the beginning: which wallets did you install?

A $5000 computer can also break down. What you need, is backups.

Saving your hard drive could help, but importing and safeguarding your private keys from those wallets is a much better option in order to keep your coins under your possession even after your PC dies (or even your hard drive).

You might be talking about pen-drive if not wrong. Yes, it helps storing the wallet file but in case it goes corrupt, a new wallet gets created when you start the portal, but as said, keeping private key is safer.

I could not see the the coins anyway. wallets also needed to re sync.

This possibly means that the data you saved needs to get re-validated before (your) newer transactions get started to accept.

There may be the HDD the part dying on the old computer and then you just haven't do anything good. And the operation may be unsafe, if you don't know what you are doing.
The best practice is to copy your wallets to the new computer. And if you tell more exactly what you have, people can guide you. While the blockchain data is huge (especially for Bitcoin), the wallet is actually very small. The blockchain can be re-downloaded from the internet, the wallet should be easily moved from one computer to another with pen drive (just make sure you eject it before getting it out).

Your Right about not knowing what I was doing. It was when bitcoin was coming down from the first big spike.  I went to ebay bought all kinds of coins.  There wasn't too many back then. I quite buying when there was about 300.  Now I'm happy I got what I did. I wish I would have got more bit and litecoins.

You would definitely need to resync for you to be able to see those coins as long it is the right wallet then it should be fine and nothing to be panic on.The most important thing on here is that you do have that HDD since those informations are being stored there which you can simply plug it on or install it on a new PC using that HDD then your problem is solved. On these kind of situation where computer is dying then it would really be on hardware issue if its not your HDD then it would be somewhere else and lucky for you that you HDD is still working.
