https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2668303.0

He opens a post saying that he has bought a house paying with bitcoin, and everybody starts congratulating him. Then, a sensible member, (stompix) starts questioning him and saying that he doesn’t believe the story, but OP keeps insisting and saying that it is true and that it will appear on the local newspaper on Monday (yesterday).

Today, we start talking about the falsehood of his story (while some people still congratulates him) and he finally appears to mock everybody:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2668303.msg27365285#msg27365285

I’ve reported him, but I wanted to comment here because I don’t know if according to the rules he will just get the post deleted or what. In my opinion, he should be, at least temporary, banned.

Generally speaking, I’d say that if a troll attracts 100+ replies, as in this case, it’s probably a successful troll and those who were fooled should consider it a lesson learned and go on with their lives Smiley

It's a useless spam thread anyways. Not newsworthy.

So you took part in a 6 page 117 Reply spam fest topic and now you want the guy banned because you think he is lying?  Huh

Not worthy of a ban by this forum's standards (or rules), IMO.  There are about 10,000 members that I'd love to see banned and who deserve it way more than this buttplug does.  Lying isn't against the rules.  Shitposting IS, and those are the only fools who comment in idiotic threads, whether they have truth to them or not.

No offense to the senior members who posted in that thread; I think I did as well.  If someone actually did purchase real estate for bitcoin, that's worthy of some bragging.  But banning someone for lying about such a thing?  Neh.

In my opinion, the thread is newsworthy if it is true, but I do know there are many people here who would delete almost the entire forum for supposedly being low quality.

At least the thread got deleted, I don’t know if he got banned. And no, not so much because he is lying but because when he is caught lying he comes back and mocks people. I’ve seen people getting banned in other forums for that. Not doing anything is an invitation for him and others to keep opening posts with made up stories.

There's only one really on my list. And he's not far away.

Other forums are usually differently moderated. Namely objectively along principles and rules. Here hidden agenda's and subjective likings of moderators are decisive.

First of all, I can't see the links you've given. Probably the post is already removed or the account is banned. However, everything was okay up until you said that the OP started to mock people. That's not good, not at all. But, I don't think the punishment should be permanent ban. I think a temporary ban with a serious warning would be enough for this kind of behavior.

I remember the man who post that! so it's already proven that his post was just a hoax.  I'm a little bit embarassed right now because I also replied to his post though I really doubt to his story at first because he can't provide pics of his evidence. Anyway, the important thing is I already learned my lesson and will not this happen to me again.

Going back to your question, I hink that is not a valid reason for getting banned because he didn't made a shitpost at all. Deleting his post is or giving him a warning is enough

Here's my opinion:
I absolutely fucking hate spam megathreads and especially those that perpetuate them. Anyone who creates a thread with a vague or general question meant for spamming and does not lock it after a sufficient number of replies (usually ≤10) should be reported, given a warning and then subsequently banned if they continue.
This is similar in that regard. If someone is lying just to create a thread then they should be given the same treatment. It's a fucking waste of time and just breeds spam.
