It essentially means that inputs that you are attempting to use for your transaction do not exist (or have already been spent).
For "old" wallets this isn't uncommon... you may have an old "unconfirmed" transaction in your wallet, that never actually got included in the blockchain, and the coins used in it were subsequently respent in other transactions... so they no longer exist.
Another common issue, as suggested by SopaXT, is that your wallet is actually from an AltCoin... a lot of AltCoins use the same wallet.dat format as Bitcoin Core, and Bitcoin Core will be able to open them up just fine, but obviously the transactions won't appear on the BTC blockchain and you can get "missing inputs" as it cannot the transactions (as they obviously don't exist on BTC blockchain).
Get one of the transaction IDs for a transaction that the wallet says is confirmed and have a look on the AltCoin block explorers for that transaction ID.
