Rig died : need help with autopsy :)

I build my first rig in april using TacoTime's excellent guide https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=163306.0 which I followed to the letter.
It worked great, until yesterday.

It had shut off, with a faint smell of burned plastic ( uh oh ). I inspected in for molten power connectors, but didn't see any. The risers also look fine. I checked the wall plug, it still has juice. The first time I hit the power button on the mobo, it lit up for a second and then refused to light up again.

Since the system isn't even considering booting up, and I see no damage to cables or the motherboard, I fear the PSU itself has given up the ghost.

Can you guys find any faults with this logic ? Did I miss a step ?

Also : how can I check the PSU for problems ?

Start from the most obvious, to the least.

Remove everything from the mobo that is not required... everything.

Check each component by one by one until it stops responding or responds in a negative way, error codes (beeps) etc.

Start with that and let us know.

Well, if there was any power that would be a fine suggestion. Nothing is going to beep, there is no feedback. But since nothing is happening, would it not make sense to asume the PSU is messed up ?

I'd plug in another one if I had one.

best bet is unplug everything but the ram cpu and psu and see what happens then work on from there if you need a hand give me a shout

Plug the PSU in, take an isolated wire and put one end where the green wire ends at the MB connector from the PSU and the other end where a black wire ends. The PSU should run if nothing is wrong with it (fan spinning).

Sometimes it also helps to take the MB out of the case (if you use one ?)

this!  If you can't get the PSU to start while not connected to anything, then it sounds like the PSU is bad... you don't have to have it plugged into anything to get it rigged into working...  just use a paper clip and put it in like described above.

That's the first I've ever heard of that...

Good to know!  I've only used Antec PSUs though and have done this test a few times.

its due to it being a dead short if your lucky it makes a loud click if your unlucky it goes bang a couple of ohm resistor can be salvaged from most old electronics

HAH!  Guess I got lucky that I haven't dealt with any Corsair PSUs then
