I've got a situation where I have access to around 1kW of free electricity 24/7. What do you guys think would be the best way to use it? As in which coin and how would you mine it?

The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

Find an ASIC that can run on your stated power, then let it go.  Use mining calculator to find out what would be more profitable for whatever hardware you have and go from there.

You need more than electricity. You also need:

1. Somewhere people can tolerate the noise. A GPU rig is much quieter than ASIC in my opinion but still you cant run it in an office with people around you.

2. Somewhere you can exhaust the heat. Remember 100% of that electricity you are using turns into HEAT and nothing else. Maybe 1W turns into sound and led light which also gets absorbed into heat. So you cannot just put it in an office or AC cooled place as it will increase your cooling cost a lot. You also cant leave it out in the heat, for example a garage where it gets too hot as the GPUs will stop running at a certain temperature so you cannot really run the rig unless you slow it to 30% of its capacity (same goes for noise).

3. Time. Yes you need a lot of time and monitoring. GPU rigs continuously crash and stop mining. The altcoins you mine constantly change, I change my coin every 6 hours or so, its very time consuming.

If you have all of those, start with a 7x GPU GTX 1070 like mine. It runs at 950W and 3000 sol/s. I bought it on craigslist for $3250. If you want to build your own, cards available Jan 6th, I would pre order now as they will sell out in minutes: https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-GAMING-Support-08G-P4-5173-KR/dp/B01KVZBNY0/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1514599572&sr=1-1&keywords=gtx+1070&linkCode=ll1&tag=httpsubbillco-20&linkId=c0d602635ad64d46f0e37d2223d542f1

This question is like saying "I get $2.50 sent to me every day, what should I do with it?"

damn, im surprised to hear you paid brand new prices for a rig that was prob ROI, i never thought anyone ACTUALLY BOUGHT those overpriced old rigs on craiglist, guess i was wrong Cheesy
Those evgas are the cheapest crap. they keep cool, but hash like shit and (usually) have the worst resale as they are cheap so everyone buys them :/
Get GOOD brand/series cards, the 30-50$ one spends more, save alot in resale later, WAY more than the 30-50$, PLUS they generally hash better (compare an MSI Gaming X series to an MSI armor for example)

Thanks for the replies!

Good point on the sound issue, will need to keep that in mind.

Sorry no other info that I can give as no hardware has been bought yet. I'm trying to figure all this out still. Even considering to just buy a few xeon E5-2450L and let them mine monero. I read one can get a decent price/power/performance with them. Thoughts?

Realistically I just need the cheapest option that requires the least attention as I won't be around there too much to look after it.

GPU rig is really tempting too though as there probably always will be something to mine with GPUs but didn't know they can just stop mining like that.
