There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. Server-assisted clients like blockchain.info rely on centralized servers to do their network verification for them. Although the server can't steal the client's bitcoins directly, it can easily execute double-spending-style attacks against the client.

Let's say you had 4 BTC and you made a backup of wallet.dat at that time. Then you spent half and your pc/device crashed and you think you have lost bitcoins. If you still have access to backup of wallet, then you should be able to recover 2 BTC (the remaining part). Although your backup date is from 4BTC days, it does not have ability to recover bitcoins that you spent Smiley

No you didn't lose your coins at all if you already have a backup of your wallet, they still exist there. You don't need to backup again and again after each transaction its kinda wack or strenuous, just recover your account and you will have your "x" amount in the wallet.
