... from a single MSI R7-370 4GB GPU to at least a new single GPU or maybe a dual GPU setup.
- zed
IMHO. If this is more of a hobby to you, go for it. For anyone that's investing and seeking a return, buying GPU's today seems ridiculous. With that PSU, I would add two 1070ti and be done. Adding two 1080ti is not ideal. It is indeed a hobby miner, but that doesn't mean that I don't want the upgrades to pay for themselves eventually. This rig was originally mining eth and produced enough coins before prices/difficulty got crazy so that it has paid for itself many times over. Regarding the 1070 Ti versus 1080 Ti and the PSU, what is "normal" power draw for an optimized 1080 Ti? 200 Watts? 300 Watts? 180-200 wats at 70-75 tdp for most 1080tis depending on the what algo you are mining but some can pull over 300 wats of you max it out.Sweet spot is ussualy around 65 tdp as they are most efficient there in wats/hash ratio

Manged to buy (2) 1070tis at $510 each. Rather unimpressed so far. They're about 50% of the performance of the 1080ti across the board, with about 50% of the consumption.
If 1080tis keep going for $1000 each, it's better to buy the 1080tis than the 1070tis.
I then managed to buy ( 8 ) 1080tis for $6,200 total, so that was a wayyy better deal than the 1070tis!

Are you confident to buy GPUs at this moment? (because of Asics, FPGAs etc) Yes. Enough coins have shown they will fork away from known ASICs that there will be money to be made. And at the end of the day I still have hardware that is worth something. Manged to buy (2) 1070tis at $510 each. Rather unimpressed so far. Thanks to everyone who posted suggestions to fix my GPU0 issue on my 4 6x470 rigs, as well as "the pill" comments. Here's an update:
- On Saturday, I updated all 4 rigs to driver version 18.3.4 & CDM v11.6 (heard about some stability issues with 11.7).
- 2 days later, 3 of the 4 rigs are running perfectly with no GPU0/OpenCL fail restart issues. the 4th rig crashes about 2 minutes after start of CDM 11.6, so i rolled it back to 11.5 and turned off GPU0. However, this has been my problem rig for quite some time, so I am pretty sure i either have a finicky GPU or a bad riser, which I will try to address soon.
- For the first few hours, on the 3 other rigs, I did have a weird thing occuring in that GPU0 on each rig would drop down to 2-6 Mh/s sporadically. It usually fixed itself within 5-10 minutes, but if I turned the GPU on/off quickly within CDM, it fixed it immediately. It was worst of 2 of the 3 rigs, and I discovered that 1 only had 16GB of virtual memory set, so I upped that one to 32GB. The other one was at 32 and I upped it to 48. Thing is, it didn't fix the issue right away, but overnight Sat and since, all 3 of those rigs have run at full capacity including GPU0.
- So, bottom line is, with W10 Fall Creator's Update it seems like 18.3.4 drivers & CDM 11.6 is the solution.
- On "the pill" front, i cant believe how easy that was! I simply downloaded and ran the .exe and bam! both my 1080's instantly went from 23.5 to 34! That's almost like getting an extra 1080 for free, so I will take it and look to donate to that dev team and this is a great tool!

We have been using this little tool to completely disable Windows Updates for the past ~year or so now. They just came out with a v1.1 yesterday, I believe we have been using v1.0. --- https://www.sordum.org/9470/windows-update-blocker-v1-1/ --- I was skeptical of it at first, but it's been working flawlessly on 16 rigs (although not all of them have been running a full year yet.

Asking you fine people here... I'm looking for a light Linux mining distro with the latest AMD drivers that would be flexible enough to allow me to add third party miner software. Tried HiveOS but that fell flat on its face (doesn't work when using integrated gfx - and I don't want to use any of the mining cards for the video signal for various reasons).
Any suggestions?

Im using MDT to deploy mining images so in my reference image have all set up correctly, fast deployment via USB stick or network if you have larger farm.

Same for me, working on IT. Mostly working with SCCM tho, but using MDT for my miners since didnt want to put SCCM server up and running (also licence stuff). What kind of requirements you have for image/mdt task?

only people that have zero understanding of the economics of mining will buy it. most likely it is a losing guess if you buy it even if it is real. It will be forked to death
