Your messages to Coinbase aren't very clear. When you started this tread, you wrote this:
Last July I transferred some of my BTC from my coinbase wallet to my Blockchain.info wallet.  On 1st Jan I attempted to transfer most of it back.

Allow me to rewrite your messages (removing irrelevant information), correct me if/where I'm wrong, and feel free to send it to Coinbase:

Dear Coinbase,

Thank you for your reply, but unfortunately it's not what I need. I'll try to explain it again:

In July 2017, I withdrew 1.75 BTC from Coinbase to my wallet, txid: <txid here>.
Last week, on January 1st, I wanted to deposit 1.25 BTC to Coinbase. But, instead of sending it to my own deposit address, I returned it to <address>, which is the address Coinbase used to send me 1.75 BTC last July. I now know this is a mistake, and it can only be fixed by your manual intervention. Can you please credit the 1.25 BTC to my account?

<add your signed message again>

Sorry for the inconvenience, and thank you for your time,
timbo555

Hello LoyceV

I wrote the below.  Yours is more businesslike but I hope if there is any openness there, this should work... (open to comment)

Hello Darren (?) and thanks for replying. I can see my first post was about possibly reversing a transaction but I quickly learnt as you say that is not possible.

My post update of Jan 06, 2018 07:01AM (I guess with the crazy number of tickets you face this was not read) is nothing to do with reversing, it is proving that I sent the funds to an address that 'belongs' to coinbase but is not allocated to any one person. The request is not to reverse but to
a) do some checking to confirm that 1.25BTC is sitting on the address xx .. within the control of Coinbase
b) check my proof from a signature / transaction ID that this was sent by me
c) send it from this unallocated to a person address to my personal coinbase address

You will appreciate 1.25BTC is a huge amount of money and I hope you will see it is the right thing to do in this case to do the above - if there is more I can or should do to help you do so let me know

In my experience, nobody ever reads, so keeping it short and businesslike can help.

On a slightly related subject: have you already claimed your forked Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin Gold and airdropped Bitcore? If not, it'll be worth your time to check.

Thanks LoyceV,

I agree yours is better - i await eagerly seeing if/that my wording worked

I've totally got Bitcoin Cash.

I'm aware I've got Bitcoin Gold but it is not available on the coinbase / b.info exchanges yet

not heard of Airdropped bitcore at all.

I'm setting up with Binance and am on Kucoins now so presumably that helps me access them?

Hi LoyceV, HCP,

No answer so I am composing a new message. they will likely get to reply but I thought a new ticket may have higher priority.  I plan not to refer to the existing ticket

You suggested telling them the original transaction ID where I sent it FROM coinbase to b.info.  looking on b.info it seems for this and all transactions, there are 2 stages,

My 1.75 went to the address I recorded as it coming from ending KMM ... GREEN

The same amount went a few hours later from that address to 2 others RED

Am I right the original GREEN one is my transaction and the 2nd is some sort of reconciliation?

with my 1.25BTC there is  the same thing... I sent it at 21:50pm to the ..KMM address .. GREEN

10 minutes later in RED it went to 2 other from KMM

I'm trying t o confirm that the first 1.75 transaction is my transaction ID to quote them ?

Many thanks, Tim

Use my "business like" example, send that. Feel free to PM me your final message including all txids and signed message before sending it to Coinbase if you want me to review it.

On blockchain.info, transactions received by the address are GREEN, transactions sent from that address are RED.

Here is my message.. basically not referring to the other ticket at all and using your message.  I'm afraid I don't understand blockchain enough to include all the id's in this post or to you - I hope that is ok and you will understand.  I'm confident the codes are correct.  Any changes suggested?... hopefully not going through creating a new signed message!!

Timbo55

In July 2017, I withdrew 1.75 BTC from Coinbase to my wallet (Blockchain.info) with txid: xxx

Last week, on January 1st, I wanted to deposit 1.25 BTC to Coinbase. But, instead of sending it to my own deposit address, I returned it to xxxKMM, which is the address Coinbase used to send me 1.75 BTC last July.
I now know this is a mistake, and it can only be fixed by your manual intervention. Can you please credit the 1.25 BTC to my account?.  Here is a signed message as proof I sent it to you myself:

Message:

Thanks LoyceV

I posted it now.  You have been very helpful, but as I said, I do not understand blockchain enough to trust that, if I sent you by PM the signature / addresses / transaction ID's etc to check, you would not be able to use it 'against' me.

This is just me being cautious, you've done nothing but help a lot, and I hope this work so I can repay both you and HCP

my email removed.. thanks for pointing that out

It's entirely up to you. At worst, a txid can be used to tie a certain transaction to you. In other words: it compromises your privacy (a bit).
In general, posting your full name and email address does more damage to your privacy. Any transaction you can find on blockchain.info's block explorer is public knowledge, it just doesn't say who owns which address.
It doesn't hurt to be careful with data though, in fact, I consider it to be a good thing to be (almost) paranoid when it comes to Bitcoin. For the future, it doesn't hurt to know a bit more about how Bitcoin works either.

I'm curious to see if Coinbase helps you out now, so please post back here.

If it helps... my (take it with a grain of salt) 2nd opinion is that LoyceV's email was pretty much "on the money" for the sort of thing you need to send to most exchange support "Heroes" Tongue

You need to keep it short, to the point and contain all the relevant info. If you make it too long, chances are they'll ignore it... if you make it too short, they won't understand what the problem is. If you don't include all the pertinent info, they'll respond with "send more info"... and then ignore your ticket for another 3 weeks.

Also, sending new tickets is, in most cases, counter-productive. It just creates extra work for support teams (which they really don't need)... and may mean that you get two different people working on the same issue who end up stepping on each others toes while trying to help.

As for the green and red transactions... your coins went in and were then likely collated into a holding address or moved to cold storage by coinbase... or used to pay someone elses withdraw request. Ignore everything that happened to them AFTER the your transaction, it is unimportant to you. The important thing is that you sent X BTC to an incorrect address at Coinbase. They should credit that much to your account.

Thanks HCP

I Sent the new ticket since the wording was better than mine and it was now 7 days since I'd updated it.  it is likely they will get to the update first but as you say, they may prioritise new tickets.

could certainly go either way but I thought a totally crisp explanation may help and that in the event the update request was not approved, it gives a chance for a new person to take a new view

we will see

more soon I hope!

I understand Coinbase uses its own addresses (rather than individual user addresses) so as to be able to aggregate transactions and thereby reduce transaction costs. But the address should be under their control, so my suggestion would be to contact them. Was the address that sent you the coins 1 address with a very high balance? If so, it's likely to be one of Coinbase's own addresses, and in that case they should be able to give you back your coins (if they're willing to do so).Another possibility is that Coinbase sends funds from other user's deposit addresses. If that's the case, your funds were credited to someone else's account, and in that case it's unlikely they can give it back to you.
It depends on the way Coinbase handles withdrawals.

Hi HCP & LoyceV,

I got some encouraging news from Coinbase yesterday:

Thank you for your reply and apologies for the trouble here.
Having investigated the issue, I am working with a specialist to address it properly. We will follow-up with you as soon as we have an update.

So fingers crossed - there seems to be willingness.

Separately, (LoyceV?), Since yo suggested it can you advice the best way to claim my bitcoin gold and the airdroped bitcore

I found these posts

BTG https://bitcoinmagazine.com/articles/beginners-guide-claiming-your-bitcoin-gold-and-selling-it/

airdropped bitcore...  https://steemit.com/bitcoin/@imineblocks/how-to-claim-free-bitcore-coins-via-airdrop-sign-bitcoin-message-using-wallet

if there is anything to add to me just using them and I guess Electrum let me know?

Thanks, Tim

That looks good indeed, and it makes sense the helpdesk guy doesn't have the authority to credit your account with such a high amount.

I used Coinomi for both. I created a QR-code for the private key to sweep both chains, but you could also just type it.

Quote

After exporting your private key, never ever use the same address again to receive Bitcoin.

There are more forks to claim, I'm still working on my "LoyceV's Bitcoin Fork claiming guide (and service)"-thread.

Hi LoyceV, HCP,

It's been too long - as an update, Coinbase said on Jan 16 that:
Having investigated the issue, I am working with a specialist to address it properly. We will follow-up with you as soon as we have an update.... Darren

On Jan 21st I wrote a 1 line chaser:
Hi Darren, I hope it is ok to ask - do you have an estimated timescale for when you might know more on this?

On Feb 16th I sent another chaser:
Hello Darren, I've not heard from you on this now for 1 month. I understand you must be very busy but can you please give me some update on timescales for this specialist support case

On 5th March I got:
David C
Mar 04, 2018 03:30PM
I’m sorry to hear about the trouble.

Unfortunately, due to the irreversible nature of most digital currencies, transactions cannot be cancelled or reversed once sent. You will need to contact the party you sent to and seek their cooperation in this matter. If you do not know the owner of the address in question, I’m afraid there are no available actions to take to retrieve your funds.

If the transaction was sent to an incorrect or invalid email address, after 30 days, any coins that have not been claimed by the recipient by signing up with that email address will automatically be returned to the sender. This means that you should receive your lost transaction 30 days from the send date if it is not claimed. If it has been more than 30 days, we are aware of the issue and working to return these funds as quickly as possible.

This is almost identical to my initial reply on Jan 6th
Unfortunately, digital currency transactions using most blockchains are irreversible, meaning once they are sent there is no way to reclaim funds.

If you sent digital currency from your Coinbase account to an email address by accident, your funds will be returned to you in 30 days if the funds remain unclaimed. If the email address has not already been claimed, you could do so to ensure the funds are returned to you.

So actions>>>>>>>>
Obviously this is another guy and he has not read the thread.... did I make a mistake by chasing after 1 week and 1 month ?... this is obviously very hard to know how to play given their low attention span
1) new thread from scratch
2) reply to this with full details
3) having done so.... wait longer without chasing...

I am keen to hear your views and will wait to get your best views before acting

Thanks for being there!

Here I would respond with something like:

"Dear David, "the other party" is YOU (Coinbase), and by contacting you I did exactly what you recommend. Can you please forward this matter to someone who thoroughly reads my request, and has the authority to credit my account with the 1.25 Bitcoin I accidentally sent?"

Unfortunately, customer support is often "as cheap as possible", which means they don't have the time to actually read what you're asking.
Like I said before:
At this point I would start with: "please read what I wrote to you", but it might help to stay a bit more friendly to get their support Wink

You'll have to get through the first later of "support", assuming there is a next layer that can actually solve problems. From my experience with other support lines, I'd say you should just keep trying.
My offer still stands: PM me your complete message, including all addresses and signed messages. I'll check if it all checks out, and see if I can improve anything to make it clearer.

Ideally, you should talk to them on the phone, but I guess they don't offer that option. Twitter may be an option: many companies respond faster when their public image is at stake. But here too: make sure it's a clear and complete message which they quickly an verify.

I feel your pain Sad "Support" can be so difficult to get through to.
It took me some time too, to get through this thread again and know the details again. A support employee doesn't have that time.

TL;DR - "new" Coinbase support drone copy/pasted from the "sent coin to wrong address" template

*sigh*... Situations like this really highlight why putting coins in wallets for which you don't have access to the private keys, is fraught with danger Undecided  If anything goes wrong, you're reliant on "minimum wage" support staff who probably have like 1000 support tickets per day to deal with Undecided

Given the amount of money these services are making, they really need to start investing in "proper" support infrastructure and customer service. Roll Eyes

Honestly, at this point, I would consider sending "weekly" queries to prevent it from being buried and then assigned to yet another support drone who will likely copy/paste the same reply.

Thanks LoyceV , HCP.

based on your suggestion I propose to post this and am putting it here (without keys) incase you recommend changes but I think it is about right.  I agree to checking out twitter / regular updates or new posts if this does not work in a week or 2

"
Hello David C,

"the other party" I sent to is YOU (Coinbase), and by contacting you I did exactly what you recommend. To save time I have copied below my post update of 6th Jan (2 months ago!) giving full details. Can you please forward this matter to someone who  has the authority to credit my account with the 1.25 Bitcoin I accidentally sent to YOU - as soon as possible?

Also note below and in this thread I was told on 16th Jan it was already in the hands of a specialist so can you investigate or re-open their checks?

I can now prove it was me that sent this to you - Here is a signed message that (if I did it correctly) should show the address FROM which I sent 1.25 BTC to the above address:

Message:
Hello Coinbase Support - this is Txxx, email xxxxxxxxx. Thi is a signature that shows the address I mistakenly sent 1.25BTC to your address: xxxxxxxxx from. I am writing to prove to you that it was ME that sent this so you can please re-allocate it to my Coinbase Wallet. The Transaction ID was xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Signature:
xxxxxxxxxx
"

NOTE.. .this was sent FROM this address since I had received from Coinbase this address ending wKMM on July 31 2017 @ 04:47 PM 1.75BTC.... this may help you confirm my Coinbase wallet. I'm updating this ticket not creating a new one since you say it is quicker. I hope it does not mean I'm not at the back of the queue

COPIED FROM THREAD> extract from reply from your Darren C (received on 16th January)
"
...Having investigated the issue, I am working with a specialist to address it properly. We will follow-up with you as soon as we have an update....
