Is it losing security in exchange for speed? Or is just faster because it was built better?

The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

it was built in better scalability, while bitcoin takes around 10 minutes for every block and then ripple just takes 3 seconds for every block to processing the transaction and that's why ripple is even faster than bitcoin or i can say that ripple is almost instand payment and it may build inter bank payment soon.
