Is Coinbase worth doing? For a starter?

Hi guys my name is Paulie and I'm just starting off doing this so I own $0 in crypto currency right now.
I'm wondering if coinbase is worth doing? Or if it's a dumb way to enter? My friend says it's not smart but figured I'd ask you guys.

Just wondering if there are any big fees with coinbase of if it's real good and the I should go with them? Thanks a lot ) any response is appreciated greatly.
