I have tried many different versions of the armory wallet installation and have not been able to get it to run correctly. I thought it was working and generated a receive code to get my bit coins from exchange. Sent bitcoins to the address supplied from armory app but never received them. After much time and brain cells no luck getting it to run. I now have 0.96.3 installed. I never have seen the large down load "bitcoin core" install in any of the versions.
First version I tried kept saying:
Armory failed to spawn the DB! operation in offline mode instead Refer to the dbLog.txt for more info
Log files report bad directory paths. Tried build them by hand but get the same errors. So it seems like a permissions problem. Tried changing permissions and had no luck getting anything to advance.
here is the log file after a full reset in the help menu: 2018-01-19 15:50:51 (INFO) -- ArmoryUtils.pyc:1014 - Found C:\Users\Larry&Janis\AppData\Roaming\Armory\rebuild.flag, will destroy and rebuild databases 2018-01-19 15:50:51 (INFO) -- ArmoryUtils.pyc:1089 - you really need to find your armory_walletnamehere_.wallet file for the address you sent your coins to
you did back that up right?

I did back up the wallet and I have the address I sent the bitcoin too. But this bitcoin core download is now over 36hrs. It just keeps going slower and slower. I have down loaded 83% but with the progress increase speed down to 0.4% I don't think it will ever finish.

Yes, it takes quite a while for first sync. 165GB of data, as well as some cpu time for verification, I think. As long as the block count keeps increasing, it is is working. While you're waiting, you probably want to check you can restore your wallet backup in Armory. Having the address won't help without that.

Start Armory offline, extract the private keys and import them into a lite wallet. Didn't you research the wallet you were sending coins to before using it? o.O
|
If you aren't the sole controller of your private keys, you don't have any bitcoins.

This is one of the reasons so many folks are against a blocksize increase. Yes, it is a lot of data. No, it is not going slower and slower, it just seems like it because all of the more recent blocks are full. be patient and let Core sync up. If you have that wallet file and its associated password your coins are safe.

I have finally got the bitcoin core synced up and an also recreated my original wallet. I also have the address I sent my bitcoins to in the beginning from coin base. Not sure how to proceed as my wallet doesn't seem to have anything in it from the first time I sent bitcoins from coinbase to it. Below is my log file. See error about 2018-01-22 11:50:36 (ERROR) -- BDM.pyc:197 - DB error: C:\Users\Larry&Janis\AppData\Roaming/Bitcoin/blocks is not a valid path
But I see this directory on my HD and it is full of blk and rev files. Not sure why the / before Bitcoin and blocks are not \ instead in the error statement.
Please let me know how to proceed. Also Armory seems to be offline not sure how I get it online.
Thanks Larry

yeah...what are those forward slashes in your path about?
did you fat finger that syntax in a CLI argument?
I thought you were moving the blockchain off of C:
I assume Armory reports "node offline" in the lower right?

This is not some pseudoeconomic post-modern Libertarian cult, it's an un-led, crowd-sourced mega startup organized around mutual self-interest where problems, whether of the theoretical or purely practical variety, are treated as temporary and, ultimately, solvable. Censorship of e-gold was easy. Censorship of Bitcoin will be… entertaining.

2018-01-22 11:50:36 (ERROR) -- BDM.pyc:197 - DB error: C:\Users\Larry&Janis\AppData\Roaming/Bitcoin/blocks is not a valid path
You can see that folder... Windows Explorer can see that folder... unfortunately, ArmoryDB can't... and all because you had to get your Wife involved! (apologies for the bad joke!) But seriously, that & symbol in your username is most likely causing your issue. I suspect that the code behind ArmoryDB is interpreting it as something other than "Larry&Janis", depending on how it treats "&" operators (from memory it is generally used as either a bitwise AND or a concatenation operator) which could have some really weird side effects. If you move your Bitcoin Core data directory to a folder that does NOT contain any spaces or strange symbols ie. "C:\Bitcoin", you should find the error goes away. This may help with moving your data: https://bitzuma.com/posts/moving-the-bitcoin-core-data-directory/yeah...what are those forward slashes in your path about? did you fat finger that syntax in a CLI argument?
That's just another difference between Windows and Linux... Windows = \... Linux = /... In any case, it won't matter... Python seems to automatically take care of correcting the path separators depending on the OS... it's just a debug output "glitch"

I restarted my computer and restarted Armory and after several minutes My wallet appeared with the coins I had sent it. Very cool.
Tried this again the next day and had to restart armory a few times before I finally got Armory to show me my wallet balances again.
Today I can't get Armory to start, just shows the start up screen says Loading 100%.
Looking at my system I see a few files are being built in the bitcoin core directories:
C:\Users\Larry&Janis\AppData\Roaming\Bitcoin\blocks revxxxxx.dat files
Tons of files in C:\Users\Larry&Janis\AppData\Roaming\Bitcoin\chainstate xxxxxxx.ldb files
Not sure where to go from here, but the armory wallet worked a few times but now it hangs when I open it, so it seems like bitcoin core must be having issues now. bicoind in the task manager says it is using 70-97% of the hard disk which is running at nearly 100% of the time

Does your computer have a hard drive or solid state drive? Core barely works with hard drives. Core + Armory + HD = Bad idea. Both Core and Armory will be much happier (and functional) if you use an SSD. I used this cable to migrate an old PC's HD to an SSD, and then to replace the HD with the SSD. While risky for many reasons, and not something you should do unless you or a friend knows what they're doing, it did work. The old PC felt (almost) new all over again.

Are you sure you let Armory, ArmoryDB and Bitcoin Core/bitcoind close down properly before restarting? It isn't instant and core's GUI warns you about it, but bitcoind lacks said ability to shout at you. Quite possible that bitcoind is verifying chainstate (and/or data integrity?) after a bad shutdown, and that will thrash your drive like you're reporting. My theory from the outside, at least. Check debug.log in your bitcoin core directory and check it is actually doing something i.e. more error free lines when you reload the file. Then just let it run its course again.

Great PhoenixFire! I started bitcoind and allowed to run until complete. I then closed and restarted Armory and it sank up and ran, Yea! It even quit beating my hard drive?
Looks like I need to keep bitcoind or armory running all the times to keep up with the blocks for the blockchain to be able to have any kind of timely use of my wallet. Is this sound correct?
Saw the blurb about SSD above. Would be nice, but I have a 1 terabyte HD and don't feel like I need the hassle or have the money to replace with SSD HD. Don't want to destroy my HD with my bitcoin on it! Thoughts on the SSD HD ideas?

You wouldn't destroy your bitcoins. That's why you have backups (paper or digital)! Worst case scenario, you reinstall Core and Armory, and restore your wallet. A bit of a time sink if it goes that far, yes, but you won't lose the coins.

...
Yes, exactly. This is called "running a full node" and it is necessary if you want the benefits of using Armory, also you are helping the network.
