Merit & new rank requirements

I have just joined bitcoin talk for a while. Although I just go to see information and do bounty, but I still do not understand how to get merit and how to get it. please explain to help me understand this problem. thank you all.

A quality post will reward you with a Merit once it's noticed by a Merit Source, there are many merit sources around here who spend their valuable time in reading the post and giving Merit.

So just keep posting and you may never know that you could get merited on a post surprisingly, just have patience and wait for it.

You joined forum in 2018 and you have been on the forum long enough to read and dyor. This topic is a right topic for you to find what you ask. Simply read OP. Did you read OP in last 2 years or at least since April of 2020 when you began to make your bounty reports?

A fake question won't help you to earn one merit and increase your stakes in bounties.

You will not get merit if you just "do bounty" and you don't really need it.

Beyond that, if you participate and contribute in discussions you will likely earn merit but if you try to earn merit you will likely not. Go to e.g. Bitcoin Discussion and read a few larger threads - you'll see what kinds of posts get or don't get merited.

I agree with the above observations and suggestions of OcTradism and suchmoon.

Additionally, merit sources are not the only ones who have smerit that can be sent to other members, as we know.

Anyone who has smerit can send them to other members, and accordingly, for every 2 merits that are received by any member, the merit receiver will earn 1 sendable merit for those 2 received.

We also know that a large number of sendable merits were airdropped when the merit system was implemented on January 24, 2018. Some of those members who received airdropped smerits have not sent all of their sendable merits, so any of those members could become motivated to send smerits to any post(s) that they determine to be interesting or helpful in some kind of way.. usually, bounty seekers are not going to inspire others to send them smerits or even to be the kinds of threads that attract the receipt of smerits (as has already been stated).

You will not get merit if you just "do bounty" and you don't really need it.

Beyond that, if you participate and contribute in discussions you will likely earn merit but if you try to earn merit you will likely not. Go to e.g. Bitcoin Discussion and read a few larger threads - you'll see what kinds of posts get or don't get merited.

In my observation it is easier to earn merits through creating or starting a thread that is helpful rather than participating discussions even if your ideas are on point. Not all users has given the chance to earn merits in just participating discussions unless the reply is clearly exerting some efforts to point out the discussions for the OP to absorb the information. However, most of my threads are just motivational and not really to earn merits but because of the users around that are also helping and promoting the welfare of the forum they consider some of my posts to be merited.

This is one of the good thing to happen in the forum. More users are helpful to motivate others to participate actively in discussions rather than joining bounties that could only resort to shitposting due to posts required to earn rewards  in the bounty campaign being joined.

The rank and merit system is indeed effective in minimizing the shitposting activity resorting to other users become helpful lately to earn merits. I guess giving them 1 merit would be fine to continue their attitude on being helpful. However, rewarding merit is still a users decision to give if it is deserving or not.

Not only this post is merit begging, an activity is really frowned upon, but also you materially failed to provide any reason for your request.
As I usually want to help users, I dared to venture in your post history and I wasn't able to fine any one worth meriting, as they are merely campaign signing post.
Best way to gain merits is writing useful posts, believe me.

This is the way the look at it and sometimes it could not be appropriate to think that users or people here just because of their self interest. Anyway, I myself too become selfish doing bounty hunting before but it change when I was able to realize that it could not help me to earn and it also hinders me to learn getting pre occupied with bounty tasks. For now, I want to learn especially about the bitcoin system how it works like in the payment system. I have been here for 2 years still not having a clue about bitcoin process like doing transaction not until I participated in technical discussion.

When are you going to start?  Soon?  Have you started already?  I did a quick glance at your recent forum posts, and there are NOT too many that are getting posted within bitcoin specific topics.  Sure, you have some, but not a lot.  You have many recent posts in the altcoin and gambling sections, and it does seem that you have more posts in the bitcoin sections in recent times as compared with the beginning of your more than 2.5 years of forum posting history.

One thing is saying and another thing is doing, and one basic step that any person can take is to merely start to engage in Dollar cost averaging investing in bitcoin, even modest amounts on investment into bitcoin on a regular basis - such as even $10 per week.. and that will get you to regularly be investing into bitcoin and thereafter likely paying more attention to bitcoin specifically, and perhaps even motivate you to get involved in a variety of bitcoin related discussions that are connected with your investment into bitcoin.

Probably there are more bitcoin talk members who have sendable merits and are willing to send their smerits when they see your posts and your contributions in bitcoin-related discussion threads.

Sure, like you mentioned, erikoy, if you are spending a lot of time posting about bounty campaign crap or spending time in the gambling or the altcoin section, members who have smerits that they can send might browse through your posting history and NOT want to send you any of their smerits.  Perhaps?

It just difficult to make a good start and I am just like newbie too. As I mention in my post that I was doing bounty reports and social media promotions so you could not expect me here to make a good post. Besides I do not want to prove anybody here that I should learn the way other users expected me to be. I have my own senses to learn and I know that it will not be that easy. Seeing threads in technical discussion without even the background of basic in cryptocurremcy seems to be a disaster.

To increase the merit circulation, although I have never seen anyones unused merits to be decayed so far.

It's possible that people have alt account and they are abusing the merits. If such abusers get selected as DT member and they abuse by meriting their alt account, there's no way you can prevent it. However, if the posts deserve merit, I think if someone else was a merit source, they would merit the posts. So, same to same although it will be abuse if they give merit to themselves.

There might be some people who are buying merit to rank up and getting accepted in signature campaign but don't forget that most campaign managers now have a look how much merit an user gets within last 120 days and of course their post quality which meam ultimately such merit buyer will get no much benefit.

I have not been generally following your activity, so this is more or less idle speculation; but knowing your personality, I guess that perhaps, it could be something like this, maybe?

I have had the opportunity to elaborate more about my opinions on controversial subjects.  (I did touch on such topics before, but perhaps nobody noticed.)  I would be far from the only one to have remarked that this can induce some people to be biased against meriting posts that they would otherwise deem meritorious.  As an advocate of free speech and freethinking, I have refused to stay strictly within the narrow confines of what can nowadays be called “popular”, or even “socially acceptable”.  The merit system does not affect my decision-making process as such; but it provides insight into the behaviour of others, both for better and for worse.

N.b. that I do not necessarily refer to what are usually deemed “politically incorrect” opinions.  For example, in the Wall Observer, some users were recently infuriated after I essentially restated (0, 1, 2, 3, 4) the condemnation of drug abuse that I made when I was at Newbie rank.  (Sharply and repeatedly.)  N.b. that nutildah’s rehash of Timothy Leary’s (and/or MKULTRA’s) nonsense received 12 merits, including 4 from a known merit source who rarely ever merits anything in WO; whereas my only drug-related post that received even a single merit was more of a fact check and a matter of basic decency, less about the drug issue in itself.

How’s this for a mini-burst?  I do think that it is meritorious to say honestly the things that many others may fear to whisper—and especially to express rational viewpoints that are altogether unpopular.  (Although I seem to be more to the extreme than eddie; perhaps I have been exercising a bit too much free speech lately...)  Decency toward someone who occasionally merit-bombed anti-liberal posts is also meritorious. ;-)
