Merit & new rank requirements

I usually go to the Beginners & Help forum, so that I can help newbies, I like it. But why I'll do this now? The newbies don't have sMerit to send me if they like my post, right?

To be nice? To help people? Not everything has to have some sort of measurable reward.

How about if the post merited is deleted? Will the merit count? Or erased too? Because somebody could just use merit for unreasonable purpose.

The merit is not undone if the post is deleted.

So it is right to assume that if a member gets banned or his account nuked the merit he has sent stays?

It'll be interesting to see subforum activity as merits cannot be given out by anyone lower than Full Member- I suspect it'll probably decrease in spammier places like Bitcoin Discussion where the same thing is said over the course of hundreds of pages.

Now that all of my negatives have been removed, the positive smerit I have sent to counter-balance those ratings remain and my total sMerit is currently sitting at -6.

Is this something I am to overcome myself, or is it possible to get my other "test" merits removed?

I was pretty excited to get used to the system, but now it seems I'm at a pretty sad disadvantage for using the system properly, because I foolishly was testing the bug before posting about it uninformed.

I can probably work my way back up to positive numbers, just wondering if anything can be done?

Yes. Yes. Or why do you post in beginners and help right now? Before the merit system?

But if you need more incentives than just helping others: you arent the only one reading beginners & help that isnt a newbie.
Good posts can be rewarded, even if they aren't directly related to you or helping you.
I can give merit as legendary to another person helping a newbie. The system stays the same, it's just different people rewarding your help.

Unused sMerit (sendable Merit). I think it's supposed to incentive rewarding others with merit and punish those that hoard their sMerit.
The merit system works only if people actively use it, else everyone is stuck at their current rank.

That seems circular reasoning. How is decaying sMerit an incentive if there is no reward to sending or holding sMerit in the first place? In fact, sending Merit is consuming a non-zero amount of time and labor. Consequently sending Merit is punished instead of rewarded.

How do you get merit points for then distribute them? By writing comments or by getting merits from others?

Oo 5 days before "Full Member", i'm shocked. But in any case this is a fair rank system and i support it. Hope i will receive my "Full" soon )

Nothing to worry if you make a quality post, but I as can see on your history post you might be have a hard time to reach that level.
This new system basically to have a quality post for every user but people might make ways just to get lots of merits, we will see this in the long run.

I would actually like to see the number of required merit increased double or triple in order to rank up. The users have 35 weeks to hit sr member and 70 weeks to hit hero, so to encourage therm to make more quality posts by needing a high # of merit would be great

Maybe remove the icons for normal topic, hot topic and very hot topic and replace them with icons based on merit score given in a thread?
A thread having 100+ replies (very hot topic right now) isn't a good thing anymore (I assume it used to be back in the days).

Could have normal topic, quality topic and high quality topic, with increasing merit score.
And yes, I know that can be tampered with, but it at least provides a little more value than than the currently reply based ranking.

It could also possibly be interesting to fiddle with consequences if someone were to get negative merit (once implemented). Perhaps ranks could be lost, or privileges such as signature styling/avatars or something similar.

I already don't like the way clicking on +merit takes you away from the thread.  Can you please have it open in a new window?

Open in new windows or tabs was disabled long ago on this forum due to it being a security risk.

would be nice in future to give merit in the same window, not in new, but i guess its ok for now, while its new. we will test this stuff for couple weeks and i guess will be found some mistakes or we could improve this together. idea is great, hope people will use it in the right way

I can't help but feel like you're trolling me right now. If you're not just messing with my head then you must've misunderstood what I was asking about. I was referring to the negative sMerit I had sent out as a test, not my Trust/feedback; that being said I also only have 1-negative trust-rating and it is from a random with no reference, rhyme or reason as far as I can tell.

At any rate, Theymos has fixed my merit discrepencies and I'm back in the game same as anybody else. Thanks for being responsive, Theymos. Gleb, do I have more than that single negative trust that I am not seeing, or did the joke go over my head?

I think this is a good idea but I'm not sure if this is going to be exploited as well. Theymos, Is this your solution to the rampaging red trust feedback issue given by dt members? So does that mean no more red trust for those post that they judge as no quality?
