Merit & new rank requirements

This new merit system is good for all of us. Now we need to read the previous post on the thread to understand the the thread and then write a meaningful post. Other than that we should search on google about the topic discussed to get more information. I need the merit and I will do this.

I thought I have read clearly that only quality posts should be given merits, why am I seeing 1-2 liner post that have been merited. Doesn't mean you agree to their reply its already of quality? If that's the case this new system is getting really amusing. We'll see how this goes, good luck to us all.

because it is new, the carrot is being dangled.. the right attitude towards this is a quality post in my eyes... it doesn't have to be 300 words long.

right now if all the lower ranked  guys got on board then they would see results, embrace change and see what happens

I agree that a right attitude towards the subject of merit is essential, as it adresses a real problem in this forum. However, I do also have a pretty clear indication that the people writing concerns in this topic, are not the same people we try to get rid of by implementing this feature. I think everybody bothering to write some sort of comment or concern in this topic, are the people who have a genuine concern for the well being of the site and their investment.
Take myself for example. I joined BCT a month and a half ago. Still I believe my passion towards cryptos, and the amount of money I have invested in it, to be at least on par with several Hero/Legendary members. I really do get why we need to implement some sort of filter to sort the good from the bad, but we are a lot of people eager to be here. This system does not benefit me or people in my position - quite the opposite in fact. That being said, I do not consider this post to be of low quality in spite of my concerned attitude.

I like this new ranking requirement.  It helps cleans up the forum.  I think many people will be stuck at Full Member rank permanently due to this change. 

I dont think so, i think all the members will adjust in the new features of the forum they will do their best to rank up their account, if you dont have goal you will remain in your current rank. I agree with the new rules about ranking up of account to avoid useless post which many user did for the sake of money.

I do like this new system of ranking up. It will certainly help in stopping spam, and maybe even alt accounts. Although some people might go more aggressive and make multiple accounts to cross merit their posts and rank up. Other thing that is sure to happen is BCT members creating telegram groups to cross merit each other. This system is pretty much like Steemit, and will certainly be abused. Higher ranks means more money and so money grabbers will surely unite! I merit you, you merit me. That's what gonna happen.

Clearly higher ranked members have got a huge relief here. They won't have to go through the struggling period!!

As for me, I will be meriting good posts made by lower ranked members so that they can also climb the ranks. The only issue is that "high-quality post" is a very subjective topic. What is a high quality post? Is it a post with lots of expertise and 100% correct English/local language (in local board)? Is it a post with 1000+ words? Is it a post made by a member with all green trust? If these things make up for a high quality post then I guess most members will never rank up, which might be very disappointing for many members as most of them (including me) are not crypto experts, but crypto enthusiasts.

So overall, I think the intention behind merit system is very good, but it will now create a new class of Bitcointalk members, known as merit farmers! No system is perfect and I hope the benefits of this system outweigh its drawbacks.

the right attitude gets you somewhere in life.. now you need to make sure you posts are of high quality.. others will then follow with more merits.

Earn merit is harder than earn activity. I think the merit point should be reduced a little.
Maybe, merit point required for ranked-up is 50% from activity point is more fair.

Member merit is start at 10 points..Full member merit is 100 points. to get the full member, I need 90 points.

I currently merit posts that are either of good quality or in some way contributing to the discussion, forum, etc. So it doesn't necessarily have to be an amazing post, if someone makes a well timed joke, I might just merit them.

I wish there would have been some sort of option of giving dislike (-ve merit) to the spam/LQ posts and if any post receives certain -ve merits/dislikes,it should be automatically deleted /hidden

That is not a good idea in my opinion. Basically i agree on why did theymos didn't add the demerit function. We have a report to moderator option that we could use if we ever saw someone trying to post a garbage. Deleting someones post is basically the job of the mods. Allowing users to delete posts without due process will be so unethical tho. Will you allow someone to discredit your post without having a due process? Obviously not

Demerit system will backfire imo.

Let  me give you a similar example

Sometimes the ability to convey a point concisely is far more important than an essay that fails to deliver any meaning. Merit is in the eye of the beholder, I'm sure the sources will each have a slightly different interpretation as to what that is. In my eyes making a positive contribution to the forum and Bitcoin community is equally important as technical knowledge.

I know Length != Quality, I read the whole thread of people getting negative trust for giving 2 liners comments and those that cannot write proper english. They basically think 2 liners  post and non english people does not qualify enough. I know most of them are spammers but some are legitly trying. And I thought thats the root of all these merit system. Anyways I find these all subjective and I'm happy some people are open enough to give merits to those that can only reply few sentences with substances ofcourse.

The problem is you dont have the ability to influence the level of your Merit.
Users will transfer their Merits to their "friends" only.
With each new transfer the amount of Merit is reduced by half, In a few days, it simply will not remain.

I've just checked your post history and all I can see are some short posts, Twitter bounty applications and posts in a trashed Russian thread (all Russian sections are on my ignore list). Not much there for me to give merit to (and I've been giving merit to a lot of random people: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;u=113670).

I do agree with you that a lot of merit will be given to friends, which could be a problem in the future, we aren't sure yet, the system is brand new.

Merit sources currently generate 9025 sMerit every 30 days, so there will always be a supply of merit.

I'll ignore beggars (and maybe leave a neutral trust rating) and I'll give a negative trust rating to anyone that is buying or selling merit (since they are not trustworthy IMO). I'm not sure what other members will do, but this will be my approach.

This is a genuine concern which I could not find anyone answering properly. But no system is perfect. may be they are ready to pay this price for making the forum spam free.

Have you heard of negative SEO? What if person A leaves 50 merits or so on a short post of person B using account of person C to get some negative trust for him. Person C will get punished without any fault.
