Chaka guys

Set your goals higher, at least member rank. Junior rank requires you to make 30 posts in 30 days and have no merit at all. It is kind of useless now.

Personally , after reading 105 pages of the new merit system, i think this will slows down the ranking up of the whole members in this forum much even it made the point that fights against those spammers and shitposters but looks like things are going crazy if you're nearly leveling up. Half of me is supporting this and the rest isn't ... It's a really hard situation or else theymos should tweaks it a little bit. Make it more easier to achieved because it's likely an impossible mission for getting some sMerits if you're not popular enough ...

I'm not on a high rank myself, but despite the troubles it could cause me, I still appreciate the system. When I see how many ridiculous posts are being made, usually written by multiplied accounts, there is absolutely no quality, only quantity. That's with majority of posts I can see on this forum. Instead of clicking on links some people ask what is the link about... Anyway keep up the good work moderators, I believe the merit system will help whole community to get rid of meaningless spam.

1. I saw already on a couple of occasions a fresh account receiving merit for a “normal” post, no super valuable post to the topic really nothing special at all. Is that just a coincidence?

This may be abuse of the new system. Such people are being caught and given negative trust. This will make their account useless if they made it for signature campaigns.

2. The bounty and signature campaigns will keep the root problems. The Dear Sir guys with a high rank keep the rank and are still posting their rubbish all over the place. Campaign managers are often super arrogant providing no details or information whatsoever.

You can report such posts and the moderators will take care of that. Just because someone is doing a wrong things and still successful, it does not mean all of us should take the same route.

I understand your point of view, but for you it can be normal for other member it can be super helpful.
Sometimes it will be clear that post got 50 merits and it could be written by anyone but in case someone will write many posts and will receive just 1 or 2 merits then what?

It's not easy to find such abuse.
Other thing is that who and why will stop you for giving your free merits just for normal posts? (I saw already some threads where high ranked members wanted to support jr. members).

Since this new system is implemented for all of us, there is nothing to complain here. New members have the chance to develop a better profile with more quality posts.

It's a really hard situation or else theymos should tweaks it a little bit. Make it more easier to achieved because it's likely an impossible mission for getting some sMerits if you're not popular enough ...

He is making changes to this like increasing the number of merit systems. It is only a week and we should be little patient.

my account activity stopped on 28, even though it's past 2 weeks period. can you help me?  Huh Huh

What do you say now with the activity upgrade? Learn to be patient and also channel your enquiry to the appropriate thread.

what about the other guys who got ranked just before this merit system starts?

They are benefited by the fact that they joined early. Also, now that the change is implemented, we better move on instead of crying about the past.

i would rather to trust codes than trust humans , i like decentralization concept but this merit system is opposite of this concept , i dont know why they did this when it's not decentralize but bitcoin is populer coz it is decentralize ,

There is a problem with codes, it is easier to game such a system. How can codes check the quality of post ? They can judge content length and uniqueness but that is not what we want. Finally, this forum will not function based on what you and I like.

"How can codes check the quality of post ? They can judge content length and uniqueness"

Responding to the above quote, I don't think is difficult to identify such nice post. One will even be moved on it willfully. Thus, I would just state few ingredients that makes a good post in my own view. Such post would be :
1. Coherent and connected to topic
2. Accurate tense plus concord
3. Either problem solving or showing the problem (maybe to the OP in this case)
4. Appealing to the reader
5. Easily understood and,
6. Adding value.

Consequently, I'm not saying that everything listed must be present in a post but off course mixture of them.

In other words, a good post isn't and shouldn't be judge on how lengthy it is.

On a lighter mode, I'm really cool with this innovation and I think we have started seeing better quality post lately. Kiss

I just found out about merit and I definitely support this system, this should help to clean forum sections a bit. Now people will be somewhat obliged to write more detailed post/answers if they want to progress in ranks.
I just hope that people who are able to distribute merit will not abuse it in any way, my biggest concern is selling merit.

Maybe make contests with merit? One who expresses an opinion in your own words, can gain merit. You can create a separate topic. The forum participants will give their predictions and claim the reward. What do you think? Thank you for your opinion.

In addition to activity, everyone now has a merit score, and you need both a certain activity level and a certain merit score in order to reach higher member ranks. The required scores are:

RankRequired activityRequired merit
Brand new00
Newbie10
Jr Member300
Member6010
Full Member120100
Sr. Member240250
Hero Member480500
LegendaryRandom in the range 775-10301000

You get merit points when someone sends you some for one of your posts. Additionally, when someone sends you merit points, half of those points can be sent by you to other people.

Certain users are designated as "merit sources". They can create new merit out of nothing, up to a limited number per month (which differs per source). I will not be posting a definitive list of merit sources (so that people don't bug them too much), though you'll soon figure out who they are if you pay attention.

There is currently no such thing as a "demerit". I'm hoping that the positive merits alone will be fine. I could add demerits pretty easily later on if necessary, though.

I'm hoping that this system will increase post quality by:
 - Forcing people to post high-quality stuff in order to rank up. If you just post garbage, you will never get even 1 merit point, and you will therefore never be able to put links in your signature, etc.
 - Highlighting good posts with the "Merited by" line.

While we will not be directly moderating this, I encourage people to give merit to posts that are objectively high-quality, not just posts that you agree with.

Do not beg for merit excessively.

Useful infographics

Forum users have helpfully created some infographics to explain the merit system:
paxmao's infographic
ibminer's infographic
8Habits's infographic
JetSet11's infographic
zentdex's infographic
alia_armelle's infographic

If you want to be a merit source:

 1. Be a somewhat established member.
 2. Collect TEN posts written in the last couple of months by other people that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread. The point of this is to demonstrate your ability to give out merit usefully.
 3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.

I am especially eager to have merit sources in sub-communities such as the local sections.

Trivia:

For current members, your initial merit score is equal to the minimum required to your rank. Of that, a certain amount (less than the usual half) is spendable. The spendable amount was calculated based on your current rank and the number of activity points you earned in the last year. A Legendary member who hasn't posted in the last year would still be Legendary, but would not have any spendable merit.

If someone sends you 1 merit, the 0.5 sMerit is not wasted; it is just not shown until you get another merit point.

There are stats here, and you can find someone's merit summary by clicking the "merit" link on their profile.

Why do I care about merit scores?  What's the advantage to having a high merit total, other than fooling myself into thinking my posts are worthwhile?  This seems to be nothing but a popularity contest, just like the "likes" on Facebook.  What am I missing here?

I have a one great idea too.
For example if user posted somethinf which was more likely a spam and moderator deleted his/her post, what about to give this user -1 merit? I mean if I have 200 merit and one of my post got deleted by mod, let's decrease my merit by -1 and make it 199 automatically. I think it will be a good feature too.
Or if user reported post to moderator and that post got deleted, give that user +1 merit, if not deleted - then -1 to reporter. This will help community to take care of what do others post.

Your supposed "objective" post misses one of the problematic points about bitcoin.com and related sources of "bitcoin" information, and that is that it has been serving as an attack vector against bitcoin and part of a hostile fork through bcash and other efforts and various misleading attempts to cause regular folks to believe that they are the real bitcoin without disclosing that they are a minority hostile sabotage and attempt at a take over venture.  Take your allegedly objective propaganda bullshit somewhere else.

I just had a quick look at that dumb Bcash forum and the first thing I found is that for the recent Electrum vulnerability they just copied theymos' post from here.  Roll Eyes

all this shows is prove you're nothing but a cheap loyalist to a defunct and currently dysfunctional system that may end up dwelling in past glory (like your rank will soon become)  if it continues to be blinded with this false sense of power and pride in achievements in cryptospace.

Don't let your legendaey rank in cryptoville make you feel like a king in the real world...

After a week now that this new merit system has been implemented.  It looks like merits are very hard to earn regardless of the quality of posts.  There should be more Merit sources that are more generous because right now earning a merit is like solo mining bitcoins.

Yes, because quality is subjective.  And also because it depends on the generosity of each individual. Smerits have turned out to be rare commodities, so some people will tend to save their smerits rather than freely give them out. Another observation is that posters sometimes have to expressively asked for merits if they like their post. So all in all, a new posting behavior has emerged.

Just my observation and thoughts.

Get the fuck out of here with your seemingly bitter and butt-hurt "loyalty" proclamations.  This is not about rank, either, so you seem to be getting a couple of things mixed up with your apparently foggy thinking and perhaps also your seeming inability to understand what various characteristics, including decentralization, that is secured by proof of work, that distinguishes bitcoin from other coins, including the shitty-ass attack vector that is also known as bcash.

1) Self-Custody is a right.  There is no such thing as "non-custodial" or "un-hosted."  2) ESG, KYC & AML are attack-vectors on Bitcoin to be avoided or minimized.  3) How much alt (shit)coin diversification is necessary? if you are into Bitcoin, then 0%......if you cannot control your gambling, then perhaps limit your alt(shit)coin exposure to less than 10% of your bitcoin size...Put BTC here: bc1q49wt0ddnj07wzzp6z7affw9ven7fztyhevqu9k

Even though asking might become a practice of some, hopefully, asking does not either get rewarded or any kind of wide-spread practice, because I don't think that would have been an intended outcome in the long term, even though it could be a short term dynamic, perhaps?
