Merit & new rank requirements

To be honest I was a bit disappointed when I at last got my activity level high enough to be a member but then they had just added this merit system so now it will take more time to at least become a member. How can I actually get more merit? I just think Jr. members or newbies who post in the threads will just be ignored. Who would listen to Low rank anyways.

Any body can get merit from Brand New to Legendary to Administrators.... only requirement is "quality post".

I don't agree with your post that only requirement is quality post . I didn't seen any newbie who have got any marit though some of them have posted quality posts.I feel it's just like some of the higher rank members are hiding behind the fairytale of Quality Post thing. If any newbie can't get single merit does that mean they can't post anything good at all? Instead of Quality Post thing why everyone can say ,the bitter truth of "newbies couldn't get merited" unless they rank up as a junior member or above.That's fine for me, because as a newbie we should learn and contribute to the forum before gets any merit just like other higher rank members who have done tremendous contributions to the forum by sharing their knowledge. Btw following post also got a merit

I like this change a lot. Hopefully we'll see an increase in post quality.

Perhaps you are getting caught up in the weeds a bit, vphasitha?

When I joined the forum in early 2014, I came here because I wanted to learn about bitcoin, and I was passionate about the topic.

Ranking up was a bit of a side benefit, but really was not part of my consciousness.

Seems that if you are posting about your passion, and helping out others, as you learn yourself, then your post will likely cause other members to want to merit you.... merits are somewhat subjective because somehow you have to cause individuals to want to merit your posts, whether it is because of quality or humor or that you helped them or maybe they just begin to like you after reading several of your posts.  Frequently, I merit posts that I don't really like, but instead, over a period of time, I have begun to appreciate the contributions of the member over time (so in that regard, a merit might be received that is not merely about that one particular post that receives the merit).

Personally, I don't see any problem with such an attempt at a list, as long as you make it fairly clear in the OP of the thread (and I would suggest a separate thread for such) that you are attempting to speculate .. and of course, that the list is an unofficial speculation, and peeps with authority and insight as to the truth of the matter asserted, such as theymos, might admit or deny some of the speculations that come out through the thread.

Someone correct me if I am wrong about the fact that such speculation about who might be merit sources would not break any forum rules, even though theymos himself said that he was not going to create such an official list and he asserted that with the passage of time, it would likely become apparent who some of the merit sources are.

With such passage of time of about 4 months at this time, sometimes the evidence of merit sources seems to be fairly clear, and sometimes some members have actually admitted that they are merit sources too.

I suppose the main problem of such a list, if there were one, is that there would be one spot that merit beggers could go to attempt to "hit up" folks on the list, and maybe some members (and/or theymos) would be opposed to such list based on that possibility, perhaps?

Maybe you could start a thread with that information, and then post a link in this thread?  Personally, I would suggest that you describe your methodology regarding how you reach such conclusions, too.

Even though it will (maybe) bother some merit sources (because maybe they will get non stop PM containing a merit begging message), i would like to see it too. Adding some data like number of merits has been given by them personally would be great for the thread. Hope you can make it.

I don't think so, mate.
Without such proposed data, users can easily find who are merit sources if they spend time and pay attention.
However, the problem is merit beggars always tend to beg for merits with foolish efforts, like PM spamming message to ask for merits, shitty posts, etc.
Therefore, I don't think the forum should have available efficient tools for shitposters to identify merit sources more easily.

Start off by learning to search for things rather than ask. Spend 10x as much time reading as you do posting. If you had done that you would have found some of the countless threads already posted on the subject. Here's one to start you off: TMAN'S guide to getting merit..

If the ratio of plagiarizing newbies is "most" then that would mean bots are becoming more prolific, no?    Surely, AI is becoming more and more sophisticated and making it more and more difficult to sort real humans from the fakes (harder to accomplish in-person, so far). 

I had noticed one regular thread that had around 10 pages within a few days of newbies spouting out repetitive bullshit nonsense, and surely distracting from the thread topic, and likely deterring real peeps from posting.  Likely this forum, and forums like this one, may also have to employ more and more bots to take on some of the work of identifying bot posts and perhaps banning those members and deleting their posts... yet probably part of the justification for the implementation of this merit system is to attempt to incentivize some of the members (including sources) to spot some of these bot posts, and perhaps, not to give merits to the bots.

Actually, there was one bot post that I recall seeing, and I was inclined to give it merit, because it was quite humorous - yet I hesitated to pull the merit sending trigger and waited for another post from the bot, which did not happen, and I did not send the clever post a merit... hahahahahaha

I'm wondering about a thing, as I'm not the tech guy that is familiar with this stuff.
Since a lot of tracking is focused on the merit people get, shouldn't we look just for a moment at those that don't get any? One thing I'm curios about and I really didn't know who to ask about, can we have also a top of users active since the merit system that haven't received a single merit, ordered by the number of posts?

And another, most users speak about increasing merit sources, incentivizing users to spend merit in order to raise the numbers of circulation merit but...are there really 5000 or 10 000 posts that deserve merit created a month?
This is starting to sound like fiat problems, what if we produce and throw around too much?

there is no precise definition of what is merit. it is the subjective factor of each participant of the forum it is giving. so for some, the number of posts it deserves more than 10000, for others less than 1000 a week. previously, there was a clear and mathematically accurate transition by ranks, now included a subjective mechanism that has not yet stopped the flow of empty posts caused by another force. the force of the money bubble that asks 15-25 posts a week not cleaned the forum from the walk-through posts, but that's the advantage of the forum that he lives and fights with the power of money and did not give up. if it is possible to introduce a rule that a week with 15-25 posts is not in activity, it is also somehow stop the influx of messages.

On a completely unscientific basis, I'm thinking that 9 out 10 Newbies I encounter are bots. I probably see more of them because I always check my unread replies. These bots often just post to the thread that is on top of the board and I've commented in a lot of the stickied threads. I tend to spot them because they pick the same limited sample of posts to copy, I guess because it is the same program running.
Then there are the human plagiarists that just google the thread title and copy the first hit. They usually stand out because they are well written but not really that relevant to the discussion.

In my International newbie post promotion thread, I'm now suggesting that I create a self-moderated thread in Serious Discussion or Ivory Tower to highlight the rare gems that are buried in the mud on the beginners board. I can't see another way for new members with quality posts to get started with merit, especially if they don't have English as their first language.

I'm also cutting back on the time I spend in the cesspits looking for posts to merit, and this will help me to find meritable posts.
