I think this is great for reducing the number of users. and requires the struggle for users to increase their quality and rank. but this is one of the highlights, so the reward can be right to the users of good quality posts
This is not correct.
Merit won't reduce number of users but it will reduce number of accounts. It is a big difference.
Account creation will really already have the limitation specially on farming but it doesnt really limit the number of users that would tend to register throughout the site. Its just still the same but now it would be more strictier and would be more harder compared before. Good post quality do already matters because if you dont do such thing you will not even ranked up.This is why abuse and merit selling  do really happens as of now.

Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

I really hope the good members here will get the help they deserve.

The advantage system is a good thing, at least we know that developers still care about the best members here.

No one will help you aside from yourself, people will give merit if they think you deserve it. For me just do your best, don’t focus much on ranking up because at that level you can still know better. You will got red trust if the DT members saw you selling or trading some merits, better to follow the process and enjoy later.

but the reality is some member who can actually ranks up but can't because of merit system. nobody want to give them merit because don't know the person, they just want to give merit to their relatives or friends. hence the good member who is actually build good post don't have merit. it's a reality, you can't just say good post=merit.

Sadly, that is also my observation. It is called social dynamics, if you are not in certain peoples circles it seems almost impossible to get recognized. It is similiar with other types of social media. If you study what prompts people to like posts on facebook for example, it has rarely to do with the quality of posts but rather how close people are to the individual who shares something. You surely noticed that there is a group of people that seem to hit the like button on almost everything you post on facebook or twitter while a large majority never seem to notice.

I am afraid the merit system is going to tap into that same kind of social dynamics...time will tell if I am right on this

Merit points is good in other side. But hopefully, their will a person or people which monitor the quality of every post so that everyone have a chance to have merits. Everyone wants merit points and to rank-up their position. And, maybe the admin, should also consider the years of membership in category of ranking-up.

merit is a reward for quality posts if it is sold the bonus system is being abused but this will not happen long. The system will detect it immediately

This is really true, everyone here in Bitcointalk must work their asses out and strive to be a better member every now and then. The merit system might be a bit unfair especially to those that are just starting out in here but it does really have some benefits; thru this Merit system moderators are able to weed out or even discourage those junk posers and clean up those who mess with the forums. Selling merits shouldn't be tolerated at all and if proven guilty, ones account must be banned. If we just cheat then there is no point in helping each other out and sharing our thoughts. Please stay away from these kind of activities.

I really agree. I as a newbie still learn a lot how to get merit without having to buy it.

Oh if it is really happening the buying of merits, It would be unfair to those who seriously follow the new rules implemented, though it sounds tough especially to the beginners like me because it seems we have no more chance to rank up because of too much high merit required inorder to move the rank, but then we need to understand also that it is part of improving everyone’s post to be more constructive, so we have to be truthful of strictly no selling merits towards one another, still honesty is the best policy.

Why don't everybody who are begging and buying merits will consider Merit System as a challenge for themselves?
Can't they just do a better and constructive post for them to earn merit/s?
It's just so dishonest way of earning merit/s if they buy or beg for it.

As far as I know there's some people here that's authorize and monitor the one's who have a good quality constructive posts. Theymos give them smerit that's more than their rank.
Begging for merit is the most pathetic thing that a person can do here. They're just like don't have the guts and confidence in the way they construct their posts. And those who beg for merits should put a negative trust so they will know what's the rules are.

Perhaps many buy and sell merit points in secret, I think it is very difficult to get merit points, most people will probably take a shortcut, maybe they have multiple accounts to send each other..

there are people whose selling and buying points, if i will tell most seller will be legendary as they have the most number of smerit,
but thanks to the IDEA of theymos that every account can merit another account (one name-one account) have a limit of 50 merits per month.

If the admin really wants every post or most of it are quality, it should start with BOUNTY (signature campaign)
If a campaign manager will implement a 3-5 post a week that must be 500 letters (at least) and must be constructive and have high quality, i think spammer and low-quality post will be gone or less.

Selling merit is not right, i believe that if you have been given it means that you have posted a quality and correct post or answer to a question in the forum, so if any body is selling merit it's a corruption

I agree with this, and I'd probably give you a point if I had any sMerits to give.

The issue is that these shitposters who get referred here by friends don't want a challenge;  they want to start earning money as soon as possible--they have no interest in writing good posts, reading, or anything except for squeezing out as many shitposts as they can in the shortest time possible.  Hence they see the merit system solely as a barrier to entry.

And I say fuck 'em all.

That's true, this new system of merit points is very good for the forums, It's not for trade, Anyone who trades merit points should be punished by getting a negative trust or permabanned. Honestly, This is an awesome challenge for everyone to improve their quality posts. I am sure, that the forum will be cleaner after a few months, spammers and shit posters will quit the forum soon.

Hoping that the supply of merit is enough and able you to rank up in the future. Cause as I see, (respectful)Admin theymos is one of the top bitcointalk user that have a lot of merit received ( https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;u=35 ), even he doesn't need it. How about those who are worthy of smerit that we see in different thread or forum, but unfortunately I don't have any smerit to send cause I sent my smerit to others and it's too limited. What do you think?

Yes, it is corruption and more of an ethical discourtesy to the fellow colleagues, because merit must be given to the posts which have some quality information in it.

Many of newbies on daily basis come on this forum and ask for certain questions but if they wont get the good advices and way forward, soon they will be dishearten and there will be no fun in joining this platform, so in my opinion, lets make it strictly professional as we might end up using information from this site.
