A Hong Kong-based investment company is ramping up an ASIC mining hardware business that will drop four Petahashes (PH/s) of computing power onto the network by the end of March.

Massive Luck Investments, domiciled in Hong Kong but registered in the British Virgin Islands, has taken a 50% stake in Swiss mining hardware manufacturer Bitmine, (formerly Exion Networks), which has been designing Avalon-based mining hardware. The new venture spans ASIC hardware sales to individual customers, hosted mining, and its own private mining pool.

Massive Luck Investments, which has offices in places including Manila and the UK, is a relatively new entrant to the bitcoin space. The firm, which also has operations in traditional gold and copper mining and rare earth metals, decided to get into digital mining after evaluating new market opportunities earlier this year. With Bitmine, it is buying existing ASICs from other manufacturers while also preparing to fabricate its own through a partnership with fabrication giant Global Foundries.

A senior spokesperson for Massive Luck, who asked not to be named, said:

“We had a board meeting which put together a small research group, tasked with making an initial assessment of business opportunities in the fledgling digital currency area. The team presented its report in early January, and the report identified the digital currencies as a potential area of disruptive technological breakthroughs, and a very promising investment opportunity.”

In February, Massive Luck decided to pursue digital currency as an opportunity in three areas: mining hardware, gaming, and the integration of digital currencies and traditional financial infrastructure. It has already started its bitcoin gaming operation, BetCoin ™ Dice, separately to its Bitmine venture. It hopes to steal significant market share from Satoshi Dice with the gaming operation.

The Bitmine ASIC mining hardware venture is pursuing three broad areas: retail equipment sales, hosted mining, and a private multi-Petahash mining operation. It will progress through three generations of ASIC chips in relatively rapid succession, starting with Avalon chips.

The Avalon OEM community has been a small but frustrated one. BitSynCom, the company behind the 110nm chip, has been promising supplies for months, with significant delays. However, last week, it said it is now shipping 40,000 each day. Tens of thousands went to Zefir, a Swiss party who organized a group purchase. Bitmine CEO Giorgio Massarotto drove to Zefir to pick up between 37,500 and 40,000 chips over the weekend – that equates to around 16TH/sec of capacity.

This is just the first in three generations of chips that Bitmine will use, however. The second generation of ASICs on its timeline come from BitFury. They are built to a 55nm process and selling for $20 per GH/sec, and are designed using a process called fully depleted silicon on insulator (FDSOI). These chips will provide 2.5-3GH/sec per chip at 0.5-0.75W/GH. It will put 16 on a board.

“We plan to deploy it in four different configurations: 5, 10, 20, and 40 cards per unit, or roughly 250, 500, 1,000, and 2,000 GH/sec,” said the Massive Lucky exec.

The third generation ASIC, labeled CoinCraft, will be a 28nm in-house effort. It has been co-designed by a number of players, including Synapse, Innosilicon, and Verisilicon. The chip is built to scale with bitcoin network difficulty, by operating in three modes.

“When the difficulty level is relatively low (the first 4-5 months of the life cycle) it can be set to TURBO mode, mining at 40GH/chip, 0.75W/GH,” said the spokesperson. “As the difficulty increases, it can be adjusted to the REGULAR mode, mining at 30GH/chip, 0.5W/GH.” Finally, as difficulty scales, the chip can throttle back to a 20Gh ultra-low power mode at 0.35w/chip.

This chip will cost $6.8/GH in fully assembled boxes, which like the Avalon and Bitfury boxes will be available directly to end-users. Bitmine will take delivery of 100,000 of these chips from Global Foundry in November, giving it 4 Petahashes of power (not including the BitFury chips).

It expects to ship 1-1.5 Petahashes of power to customers who want to run the boxes themselves. However, this is really a chip for the cloud, as it enables the firm to dynamically adjust power consumption in a large-scale computing operation, and that’s where the other 2.5-3 Petahashes of power is going.

That’s where the Asian datacenter and a $14m, 1.8 Megawatt supercomputer comes in.

computerMassive Luck Investments and Bitmine are jointly building a data center in China that will host mining power using the third-generation chips. That facility, which will cost just under $1 million for basic physical construction, will be finished around February, although it will start hosting CoinCraft processors in small quantities in December.

Massive Luck may mobilize the entire 5,000 workforce of one of its companies, Cutting Edge, to work in three shifts around the clock to assemble all mining units within a week or so in January. Around 0.5 Petahashes of CoinCraft computing power will be hosted for customer use.

The supercomputer comes later. Actually, there are two of them, built under an agreement with the Shanghai Supercomputer Center. One of them, to be delivered in Q4 2014, will cost $12m to build, and will offer CPU power designed for data modeling tasks (the normal things that academics do with supercomputers). Massive Luck Investments gets “certain subsidies and exemptions” in return for its help, because the Chinese government badly needs supercomputing power.

“The Chinese government provides preferential policies to attract FDI [foreign direct investment] in certain high tech areas that benefit the Chinese economy,” said the Massive Luck exec. “They require traditional CPU-based traditional computing power to address the acute shortage of it. Shanghai supercomputer center will be responsible for the overall facility design and staff training.”

However, the other supercomputer is scheduled for installation in March at the Bitmine/Massive Luck data center, and it’s where the firm’s 2PH of remaining ASIC hash power will go. This will cost $14m including the cost of the building, and the materials and labour for installing the equipment in the datacenter. However, the spokesperson says that Massive Luck owns and controls all of that power, promising that the Chinese government won’t be able to begin manipulating the market with it.

It isn’t clear whether the firm will fabricate more CoinCraft chips after this. A lot depends on market variables such as bitcoin pricing and what other ASIC vendors are doing.

“We’re following the CoinTerra developments very closely,” said the Massive Luck insider. “This is a dark horse, so a lot will depend on what they deliver.”

In the meantime, the 800,000 Avalon chips due to hit the market in the next few months are only the start, as mining becomes an increasingly cloud-based venture. Get ready to watch those difficulty charts spike even more this fall.

Bigger isn’t better.
Do you think that fitting the highest possible number of hashing units into a single, 500+ GH/s silicon die is the best solution? We don’t. Real life experience has shown that the highest performance, lowest total system cost and greatest scalability are achieved by large arrays of small and cool ASICs. That’s the reason why the A1 was designed so perfectly and was thought from the ground up to scale to very large private or public mining pools.
 
Power horse or cool chip?
You choose. Lower power usage means also greater overclocking abilities, the CoinCraft A1 design allows for supply voltages as low as 0.5V for extremely low power, high efficiency designs. But when you need to squeeze out the highest possible amount of power, the A1 has no rivals. Thanks to its PowerTune feature, the A1 can  run at twice the nominal speed in Turbo mode, or even further if adequate power dissipation is given. Run your systems in Turbo mode to get the highest possible profits when the difficulty is low and switch them at a later time to low power mode to reduce energy consumption and operating cost when needed.
 
Industry leading power efficiency
With power usage ratios as low as 0.35 W/GH in ultra low power mode, our design clearly marks the top of the Industry in terms of power efficiency and, as such, delivers the highest profitability out of all Bitcoin mining devices. This was achieved both by dedicating a significant number of top-level experts and IC engineers to the system’s design and by the exclusive licensing of highly optimized, patented SHA256 work engines.
 
Standard I2C interfacing protocol
Keeping the system’s total external components to a minimum is one of the great accomplishments of CoinCraft A1. By adopting the industry standard I2C protocol, a huge and powerful tree of IC can interface itself to hosts that are as small and inexpensive as a low cost PIC from Microchip, reducing the time to market and total BOM costs dramatically.
 
Tree or daisy chain configuration ready
Larger scale designs can see their performances degraded by the propagation time needed for a new Bitcoin job to walk through the daisy chain of chips till the last IC, wasting hundreds or even thousands of clock cycles. The A1 addresses this issue in a completely new way by using a binary tree structure where each chip propagates the work to two children nodes in the tree, reducing the propagation time to just 8 clock cycles for a tree of 511 ICs! The A1 can also be configured to work in the traditional daisy chain mode where smaller arrays or simpler design is required.
 
Customized high power IC package
One of the practical limits of current generation ASIC designs is the high supply current that the IC requires. Some have tried to work around this problem by using a huge amount of BGA pins, but this design makes the final package bigger, more expensive and subject to dangerous thermal excursions of the package that could lead to crackings. We have solved the problem by adopting a custom package that uses bars instead of pins for the power supply, giving plenty of energy to the IC while keeping the package size small and resistant to the high power dissipation figures involved in Bitcoin mining.

1.6 Bitmine will confirm its acceptance of your order by sending you an email confirming that the payment has been received and cleared. This operation confirms your position in the shipping queue. Bitmine shall not be under any obligation to accept your order and the contract between you and Bitmine for the sale of goods will only be formed once Bitmine has sent you such Paid Order Acceptance Confirmation Email.

1.7(***DELETE FROM If you are a consumerTO***)You must be at least 18 years old to order goods from the Website. By accepting these Terms you are confirming that you are no less than 18 years old. If you are using the Website to purchase goods on behalf of a business, by accepting these Terms, you confirm that you have authority to bind such business to a contract with Bitmine for the purchase of goods.

1.8 Any contract between you and Bitmine is subject to your right of cancellation if you are a consumer and according to the Cancellation policy (see 5.1 below).

1.9 Bitmine may change these Terms without notice to you in relation to future sales. Please check these Terms every time you wish to order goods from our Website to ensure you understand the terms which will apply at that time.

1.10 In addition to the traditional order queue where a full upfront payment is required, Bitmine may offer the possibility to place your order under a "Reservation queue". If you opted for this solution during your checkout, you will be assigned an order number based on when we received your order and no immediate payment will be required. Once the goods for your order are ready to be assembled, you will receive a notification e-mail with a link to an order confirmation page where you can confirm your order and, once we clear your payment, it will be placed at the bottom of the shipping queue. You may at any time proceed with the payment in order to confirm your order and enter the shipping queue. Please note that the reservation queue does not imply an acceptance of your order by Bitmine as per 1.6.

 
2. AVAILABILITY, DESCRIPTION, SPECIFICATION AND PRICE OF THE GOODS

2.1 All goods are manufactured on contract and are not readily available for delivery unless otherwise noted.

2.2 The description and specifications of the goods you order will be as shown on the Website at the time you place your order.

2.3 Subject to 2.4 below, the price of the goods will be the price quoted on the Website at the date the order is received. All prices are quoted in USD (United States Dollar), EUR (Euros) and BTC (Bitcoins) and are exclusive of delivery charges, which will be added to the price of the goods on confirmation of the delivery address and prior to you making payment.

2.4 Every effort will be made to ensure that prices shown on the Website are accurate at the time you place your order. If an error is found prior to dispatch of the goods, Bitmine will inform you as soon as possible and offer you the option of reconfirming your order at the correct price or cancelling your order. If you cancel, Bitmine will refund you for any sum that has been paid by you or debited from your Bitcoin wallet for the goods and their delivery to you.

2.5 The price of the goods shown on the Website is exclusive of VAT (where applicable) at the relevant rate chargeable in Switzerland at the date of your order.

2.6 Where the goods are supplied for export from Switzerland, you will be responsible for complying with all applicable laws and regulations governing the importation of the goods into the country of destination and for the payment of any import duties or taxes which are levied on them.

 
3. PAYMENT

3.1 Payment for the goods and delivery charges can be made by bank wire transfer or Bitcoin payment.

3.2 All deliveries are subject to prior clearing of your payment.

3.3 If, where permitted by these Terms, you wish to receive a refund for the goods, you will need to provide Bitmine with details of the source bank account or Bitcoin wallet number used for the purchase of the goods.

 
4. DELIVERY AND RISK

4.1 The goods you order will be delivered to the delivery address you give when you place your order, subject to confirmation of acceptance of your order by Bitmine.

4.2 All products ordered from Bitmine shall be sent to you via a secure courier service.

4.3 If delivery cannot be made to the delivery address provided, Bitmine will inform you as soon as possible to get a new and correct delivery address. In this case, the fees of the second shipment shall be paid by you.

4.4 A signature will be required on delivery of all Bitmine products. Receipt of a signature at the delivery address for any products ordered by you shall be proof that the order has been delivered to you.

4.5 Every effort will be made to ship the goods within the shipment date specified on the product's description when placing the order (the "agreed shipment date"). In case of late shipment from Bitmine, the following late shipment  policy applies:

4.5.1 Shipment can be late up to a maximum of 10 days from the agreed delivery date.

4.5.2 For each subsequent 10 days of late shipment, we will add for free 10% more hashing power to your order.

4.5.3 After the 61st day of late shipment  you have the right to request a full refund and we will pay you an additional penalty of 10% of the initial order amount, excluding shipping fees, 100% of the shipping fees will also be returned.

4.6 You will become the owner of the goods you ordered and responsible for risk of loss or damage to them once they have been shipped to you.

4.7 All shipments and prices are based on EXW terms pertinent to Incoterms 2011.
 
5. YOUR RIGHT OF CANCELLATION

5.1 The goods sold by Bitmine on its website are manufactured on order and as such are not subject to applicable laws for commodity items.

5.2 Once confirmed, the order cannot be cancelled unless it is complying to term 4.5.3 above. To exercise your right of cancellation, you must give written notice to Bitmine by email, to the address or email address shown at 8 below, giving details of the goods ordered and the order number.

5.3 You cannot exercise your right of cancellation in any case once the goods have left our warehouse.

5.4 Once you have notified Bitmine that you are cancelling the contract, Bitmine will verify that it complies with our refunds policy and, if confirmed, will refund you within 30 days of receiving notice of such cancellation for any sum that has been paid by you on that specific order. Refund will be made either by bank wire transfer or by Bitcoin payment depending on the original payment method.

 
6. NO RIGHT OF RESALE

6.1 We only supply the goods for domestic and private use. You agree not to use the goods for re-sale purposes.

6.2 The delivery and billing address entered at the time of checking out your order are final and cannot be changed, unless a reasonable proof is given to justify the change (for example, relocation to a new home) and is subject to Bitmine's sole prior acceptance.

 
7. LIABILITY

7.1 Any liability for any loss or damage or any indirect or consequential loss or damage suffered by you in connection with your order of goods, including loss of revenue, loss of profit, or loss of business, and whether caused by tort (including negligence), breach of contract or otherwise, is explicitly excluded.

7.2 The maximum extent of the liability that Bitmine is responsible for in case of a late shipment of the goods is the one specified at point 4.5, 4.5.1, 4.5.2 and 4.5.3.

9. GENERAL
9.1 Bitmine may transfer its rights and obligations under a contract made with you pursuant to these Terms to another organization, but this will not affect your rights or obligations under these Terms.

9.2 You may not transfer your rights or obligations under these Terms to another person.

9.3 These Terms are not intended to and shall not create any rights enforceable by any person other than the person who is party to the contract with Bitmine for the supply of goods.

9.4 If any court or relevant authority finds that any part of these Terms is unlawful or unenforceable, the validity and enforceability of the other Terms shall not be affected.

9.5 No failure by us to exercise any right or remedy under these Terms shall constitute a waiver of that or any other right or remedy.

9.6 These Terms and the supply of the goods by Bitmine and any dispute or claim arising out of or in connection with it shall be governed by and construed in accordance with Switzerland's law, and the responsible adjudication court will be in Bellinzona, Switzerland.
