Ether has its purse which you can easily download from the official githab of the Ethereum project, it's a pretty handy thing, if you are looking directly at the Web purse, then use MEW or MIST. I hope I understood you correctly

You can use both MEW and MIST.
Download MetaMask/Mist and add it as extension to your browser. Make an account and sync it to MEW (MyEtherWallet). You can use your Mist account for sending and receiving Ethereum and MEW for converting ETH to BTC.

Recommend this Smiley
MyEtherWallet (no download needed),
Mist (Desktop), Parity (Desktop),
Jaxx (IOS/Android) ← needs to export Mnemonic phrase (12 word phrase)  to MEW to manage, not a good idea for noobs; https://myetherwallet.github.io/knowledge-base/migration/moving-from-jaxx-to-myetherwallet.html
Exodus Wallet → http://support.exodus.io/article/128-how-do-i-receive-unsupported-erc20-tokens
imToken (Android) ← someone check
Copay, Electrum, Greenadress
Hardware wallet: Trezor, Nano ledger S ← best!

I think Trezor is the most reliable. myetherwallet works with him as a shell. But, it will have to be spent. Calm is expensive. It is better to order from the developers.

Web wallets are not the safe to hold your coins why not you look for a hardware wallet?
You can use trazor and ledger safe and secure in long time.

If you have a healthy browsing habit, go with myetherwallet, you have the full control over your eth and tokens with large support of various API, if you are more into Ethereum than tokens, Metamask is a better option.

Thanks guys for your answers, but seems like I forgot to give emphasis on "API" - I need to send ETH using own-written programs like C#, Perl etc.

UPD will learn myetherwallet - mentioned in previous replies, hope it supports API as I expect.
