MSI Z170A Gaming M5 6 GPU

Hi guys,

I'm trying to get my mining fully operational but so far only got 4 working gpu's. I use a MSI Z170A Gaming M5 with 6 MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X 8 and a 1200w coolermaster psu. My OS is Ubuntu but i don't think it is the problem with the os.

In the bios there is a board explorer and you can you see which slots are in use. And that are only 4 but connected 6 gpu's. I'm using pci risers (molex powered) and switched them up a bit but don't seem to solve the problem.

In the bios i changed PEG0 and PEG1 set to Gen1 and Above 4G Decoding set to Enabled

Can you help me?

Which firmware of board are you using? Which ver of ubunto and amdpro drivers?

-make sure your bios version is either from 12/2016 or 5/2017. This can be found in the top right corner of the BIOS screen

-go to advanced settings and enable "4G Decoding"

-go to integrated graphics settings and change the first option from "PEG" to "IGD"

-plug your monitor into the integrated graphics port on the mobo

-Use either simpleminer-RX-v1093-4.11.rc8-16.60-enableexe0ANDips0.imgc or simpleminer-RX-v1093-4.11.rc8-16.60-enablerc60.imgc

-and make sure you are using a Skylake processor (not kaby lake)


Any other settings you changed will cause issues. Set to Auto/pull cmos to get back to defaults before changing what I said above.

Have you used Ubuntu at all? Does Simpleminer come with the AMDGPU-Pro drivers?

I'm having a really odd problem where my fans stop when starting Claymore but also when I try to boot via PEG (normally running IGD) with the monitor connected to the GPU.

I did not have this problem the first time I set this up, and have not been able to get past it. Claymore will mine happily and run the CPU up. It thinks the fans are at 22%. Any help greatly appreciated!

Sorry I have no idea! That is a pretty strange issue.

My post above I just copy-pasted from something I sent to another person who uses smOS. All the other steps above should get 5-7 GPUs working in ubuntu.

Had the same problem the other day.  I flashed to the 1D driver and this part in bold is what really fixed everything.

Did you flash up to that driver or backwards from the 7977v1E (05/2017) driver? I'm already at the newest, thinking of going backwards...

The suggestion to plug monitor into integrated graphics port is a bit odd.
All other mobos that I used inactivate this port when at least one GPU card is present.
Are you sure about it? I have one Z170 that I want to add cards to when I will be able to get ANY

Just try to find some H81 pro btcs or look for biostar.
This motherboard will give you a lot of trouble

Hey I was able to finally get 7 gpu working on this motherboard by using a modded bios.  It came with the ethos operating I got from GPU shack.  I was having the exact same problems as everyone else until then.
