cpu miner - processor getting hot

How do I configure CPU chip to only mine on 1 or two threads? Currently bat file
starts mining 4 threads and cpu gets hot - around 80 degrees.

bat file reads:

minerd -a groestl -o stratum+tcp://grs.suprnova.cc:5544 -u xxx.xxx -p xxx

x is user/worker name and password

Does the -t 3 (-t <cores>) work for you.

Best is to mine on 3/4 of the cores.

Use a good fan else the cpu wil still get hot, even with less cores in use.

Yeah I would reduce the voltage/speed rather than disable cores if possible. All I have messed with are i5's and i7's but with those you can just reduce the multiplier and/or turn off turbo if you dont want to mess with figuring out a stable voltage.

I am running I5 7300ghz. on MSI gp62 laptop + (GTX 1050 GPU ) Using two threads on CPU.

Cooling fan speed adjustment is via MSI dragon centre set on cooler boost (highest setting).

Now temp runs at at 73 c  Still a bit too high?

How do I undervoltage and turn off turbo?

Just stop mining - your laptop is not built to handle it and your payout wouldn't be worth the effort anyways. I know that's not the answer you wanted to hear, but it's the truth.

It's fine (very good in fact) to do some non profitable mining in order to learn more about it.  It's just that your laptop is not a good PC to be mining with. Laptops typically cannot handle the heat very well and best case scenario is you shorten the lifespan by a significant bit... or you fry it. If this is a laptop that you need to use daily for non mining things it's just not worth the risk.  If you have access to any kind of desktop, even one that's 5-6 years old from Dell/HP etc it would be a better option if you just want the learning experience.

Yes, this fact. Why some member suggests CPU without GPU/Laptop doesn't use mining.

Those of hardware in produce didn't design for spesific to mining. Mining process requires your hardware running for long time periods, good fan design, and mining process produce the heat.

well I guess you'd better try to mine on your gpu instead of CPU)
for your gtx 1050 there are plenty algos with some profits even - see whattomine
but I guess LUX would be good, this is high energy efficient algo will be working ok on laptop I guess.
or you can try some cryptonight based coins, like electroneum, aeon, sumo and etc

Yes got it about laptops generally. Will also try other less energy using cryptos.

If it is older than just turning down the multiplier than I cant help you there. I did have a q6600 that I overclocked, but I dont remember what I did (just followed some guide).  Im sure if you put "How to overclock <your cpu>" you will find guides on how to overclock, then just do the opposite.

I would suggest to mine xmr (monero) with your config and use cpu and gpu both together.

With xmr-stak you can configure the amount of cpu cores you want to use.
Set it to 2 or 3 in the cpu.txt

Create a wallet with an exchange or the official monero-gui and use minexmr.com as pool (you can already get payments from 0.01 xmr).
I guess it would take you about a day to reach that amount with the config.

Extra tip, place your laptop in a cold environment like a garage or something, so it will never have issues overheating (also less noise and heat in your house)

Yes - tried monero. Quite a good coin and algo. But seems to be run by one individual (wallet) and fees were almost as bad as Bitcoin. Not really worth mining.

Nice Hash ok (can mine alt coins and they payout in BTC) but again huge problems reaching the min payout.

I am continuing to try small altcoins. The criteria for me is:

Easy set up for miner.

Decent independent wallet.

Low or no fees

low payout threshold.

All this info readily available on one site.

I am also looking at scrypt algo coins and finding a specialised rig - something like ant miner but cheap.
