Easily over 100 automated tweets in the last few minutes.
Coming from multiple new accounts with decent 'real-sounding' names but with no followers

https://twitter.com/#!/search/bitcoin

At least they don't LOOK like spam, but I'm not clicking on those short-links!

Those are annoying.

I made a thread about one before... they were just linking random thread from this forum and putting them out there.  with the percentage of troll posts and bs posts it is just not a good idea to pull random links from sites and throw on twitter.  It's pointless.

What could be the reason to do this? Some kind of coordinated effort to discredit BTC or its users? Is there a way to make money off this?

I guess you could ask the same of spammers who send emails containing no links. Not the same, but similar and it begs a big "WHY?"

People do anything to get some attention, and 'bitcoin' is ofc a hot word at the moment. Or maybe they're trying to get it into the trends  Huh

Bitcoin Core developer [PGP] Warning: For most, coin loss is a larger risk than coin theft. A disk can die any time. Regularly back up your wallet through FileBackup Wallet to an external storage or the (encrypted!) cloud. Use a separate offline wallet for storing larger amounts.

They often have embedded php 'images', too small to see. When you load the email, you call the php page with your email as a variable. This shows that the email address is active, and that the person who owns the email opens stuff from random people. This makes the address very valuable. They can then send their first waves of real spam to that address knowing that it will have the maximum effect at good addresses before it starts getting filtered. It also makes their lists more valuable for sale.

This is why places like google block images by default -- they can be used against you.

But that is only some of them. I'm pretty sure I've gotten those random emails without an embedded image too. No idea what the purpose is. To check if it bounces?

I'm glad my bitcoin twitter thing isn't on that list.  I don't make mention of bitcoins specifically, I just post mtgox stats in half as a service for those that want up to date mtgox info on twitter, but mostly to decrease spam on  the irc channel, people used to incessantly mention every tiny swing.  So it's a tongue-in-cheek statement of, "Yes, yes, we all have the internet..."

+1 hate for twitter, but it has 1-2 uses.

The dude(s?) was just trying to get followers interested in bitcoin. The real spam would start later.

Now I'll just STFU cause i've already said too much about it.
