S9 what gets hot

So I’m playing with my s9 to quiet it down.  I took it all apart and mounted the hash boards so I could blow air directly at them instead of through them. Do both sides of the hash board need lots of air?  One side. Has dull allluinim plain heat sinks and the other side has shiny heat sinks with more machining?  Which side makes the heat?

I plan to use a box fan to cool the chips and then I need to add a pwm generator to fake the fans. Is there a way to do this without a pwm generator?

I’m no expert, but I think the boards will overheat doing it like that. The air need to move through the heat sink to catch the heat and take it away. Both sides of the board need air flow and a box fan can’t generate the cfm those fans do that are on the S9 already.

You wont get much airflow this way unless your blowing AC directly on the boards, the vortex and air pressure it creates inside the miner case helps with the cooling since these heatsinks are tiny and have little surface area.

Since you are taking these apart, the only way to "cool" them better is to make your own custom heat sink with more surface area. Example, you would basically have to mold your own aluminum heat sink with the same chip position pattern and wing design to draw more heat away.

Take this picture for example, but think of one that covers all your chips on one board, and then cool off the heat sink itself.

You can not do what you are trying to do.

Put it in a sound proof box. There are several threads on that .

They are built the way that they are built for a reason, you are going to burn your boards up. You shouldnt have purchased an industrial miner and tried to run it at home. They are loud because that is the kind of air flow needed across the heatsinks to keep them cool. Some crappy box fan will do literally NOTHING for you.

I appreciate all the concerns.  I am trying to get away from the howling noise that is caused by the fin design and air velocity.  I believe separating them out to individual cards will greatly help this issue.  If I can't get enough air velocity to keep them cool I am going for immersion cooling. 

Out of curiosity do any of you know the answer to my original question about the different sides of the hash boards, and if they both generate the same amount of heat, or if there is a hotter side?

The side with the taller heatsinks is directly connected to the hashing chip. The smaller heatsinks on the backside pull heat through the board so they wont be quite as hot as the other side. You still need to cool both sides equally tho.
