Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

herb, or is it Herb, why are the first two numbers rounded, and the latter two exact? Is Google going broke and no longer able to support the manpower to count grains of sands resorting to guessing? I wonder if they considered all the sand at the bottom of the oceans. And what about sand mixed in with dirt--multi-racial sand (bet you didn't see that coming)? IIRC, the Earth is about 5 Billion years old. That works out to 157.788x10 15 seconds. Or: 157,788,000,000,000,000 seconds. The quoted number is off by more than a few orders of magnitude. I noticed because it was far too close to the "number of possible Bitcoin addresses" number. Edit: initially calculated for 5 trillion years  |
