What causes huge spike in market prices of some coins (E-coin ecn)

OK im fairly new to crypto currency but have been watching the markets the last few weeks and nearly all coins were falling. Untill today when E-coin ecn spiked by nearly 3800%, i cant work out why this happens. I understand about the pump and dump theory but i dont think this was the case. So i am just wondering if anyone has an answer to this or even better a possible way of predicting it ?
