Disclosure, I am not aware of how well or bad mybitcoin is, this thread is a representation of how I currently see it and hopefully will get clarity along with others.  Make no full judgement for or against mybitcoin based on this one post alone.  Thank you. I see people refer to them as the only option sometimes.

A lot of 'older' members use it.

But I always see complaints from newer members and I believe there was a decent amount of security issues http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=18098.0 http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=25635.0 http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=25643.0 http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=17423.0 http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=26224.0 .

I could paste threads all day, but most have issues, then further down resolved, but looking closer not every issue is resolved, there is just the common issue of people having a smart ass reply and a conversation ends lol.  Those links are just random choices, search on your own.

So how does it keep getting hit on for being not really a 'Scam' I would think, but having as many issue as it does yet continues to be used by a lot of major sites and still gets talked about negatively by other users.

I am trying to factor in, when things are good and everything is working, no one says anything.  So I factor in that there will never be as many posts saying something is good than there is something is bad on almost any topic, just in this case, it is to the point that I am looking for a service like this, I like mybitcoin in theory, but right now I am still not sure, and would like more opinions to think further on the matter.

Thanks.

But I am only one person.

I see a lot of 'classic' members with their accounts fine.   I would consider you part of that with Bitcoin Weekly.  I don't see Bruce Wagner's account being messed up either.  More or less "unrecognized" members using the service I see touting up with complaints.    And from what I gather, it just seems like that, 'it could be a lot better'.. like that is site is constantly being updated I'm sure (as should all sites that deal daily with peoples' Bitcoin, there should be staff available 24 hours a day), but I guess that is one of the things that maybe made me create this thread.

I still have interest in the site, but the threads I posted, many more, I just wonder if someone from the site itself would maybe want to take a day or two through the forums, resolve issues, close cases, etc.  Seems like it would be a wise investment for themselves, and it would only take their time to just answer questions and be the last word in threads.

This is very good to know.  I know programmers are not social by nature, and I'm sure whoever is running mybitcoin has enough flow of Bitcoin and cash where obtaining new clientele is not necessary.  Maybe it is time for some of these companies to hire social media people for each team.   Jared from Tradehill has to be my favorite example of that, that team knew what was up from day one and had someone on that and he does his job well.    Mybitcoin needs a face or a representative for the amount of people and business' they service, it would really be in a lot of peoples best interests.  Or not.

My experience is also anecdotal, but I use them for processing BitBrew orders and haven't lost any BTC yet. Of course, it was inconvenient when their site went down temporarily and I've reduced the amount I keep there at any given time.

It would be nice if there was more competition.

Still around.

Just my .02 BTC, but any wallet service that does not have the functionality that the client has is worthless. The fact that generated payments are not compatible is IMHO unacceptable.

I lost half a coin because my autopayout sent to them when the site was down.  I sent email and waited.  Still nothing.  I am glad it happened because it could have been worse if I had come to trust them.

Wow.  I really do not want to believe they are staying afloat solely based on the older user base and that built in trust (and or just convenience at this point, on top of lack of options).

I'm the same as you.  I've got a bad impression without having ever used them.

From all the complaint threads I read it seems like the site is run on autopilot.  If everything goes smoothly, you're fine.  But when something goes wrong, it seems like users are met with deafening silence.  There's doesn't seem to be a way to email for help or open a support ticket.

If people were getting any feedback, it'd be easier to dismiss any given complaint as some cranky angry user, which even the best sites have.  But the apparent inability to contact anyone behind the site makes me nervous.

Once again, this nervousness is based on hearsay, and no direct interaction with the site.

mybitcoin is a scam, plain and simple.  I've seen plenty enough negative feedback with people not getting anything back, even after waiting weeks and weeks.
http://bitcoinfeedback.com/viewuser.php?un=MyBitcoin%20LLC*&id=195

Hmmm... looks like something is wrong with my calculation of feedback score.  They shouldn't have 100% - they should have 25%.

Neutrals don't count, without any negatives there, it is all positive.    Those negatives are showing in the wrong spot.  I have not seen that site but that hopefully will be an easy fix.

Those negative feedbacks are from persons who lost/forgot their password on a service that doesn't offer a pasword recovery option and where no email is given for registration.
Opinions from such persons don't take much credit from me.

I lost 0.05BTC with mybitcoin on that day their website had problems, but paypal also limited my account at one time, and i haven't stopped using them, in fact i have 2 verified paypal accounts in different countries.

If one would use these type of "problems" as an excuse not to use a service i just ask this:
WHY IS MTGOX STILL IN BUSINESS?

Established user base and lack of choices, in fact, the same exact reason why MyBitCoin is in business from what I can gather, and so far this thread is proving it big time.  I really wish it wasn't.

Yep, I had the negatives/neutrals swapped in the calculations.  Fixed now though.

You have a point.  I think most people just assume that there is a way to recover their account if it is lost, since any proper online website WOULD have password/account recovery options.

I take it you think it is ok for mybitcoin to steal those coins from those users, because it is the fault of those users for forgetting their account information in the first place?  IMO, that is terrible customer service and warrants the negative feedback they have received.

MtGox warrants a bunch of negative feedback as well (which they have rightfully received on these forums).

I exclusively use mybitcoin.com as payment processor on all my sites.  I have never had any trouble with them.  However, all the problems I see reported do concern me.  I suppose at some point I'll sync my stores with the bitcoin client running on my servers, but with mybitcoin.com running well for me, it's hard to justify taking the time.

No, i don't think that's ok. Au contraire... I just think people should be more careful and maybe add their email address to their accounts after they create them, just like i did.

Yes, I hope the impression so far isn't that they are necessarily a scam, but this is not a tight ship for sure, all the users who still use them are attesting to that at the moment.

Yeah.  On my new website (see the sig!) I decided to make your login your email address, with verification.  I knew that was going to cause some complaints from the more privacy obsessed (cuz its so hard to make a fake email...) but felt it was the only way to safely and reliably deal with people who lost their password.  And sure enough, people complained.

But if it's too hard to manually verify these email-less accounts for these people, and they've received numerous complains, then you would think they'd reconsider the policy and make emails mandatory.

If i'm not mistaken, mybitcoin.com had mandatory email in their registration form in the beginning and removed it because of the privacy freaks

So, I guess the best strategy is to use it on minimal trust mode (ie. use it for the service, but keep as little as possible in the account).

A lot of people have reported that their passwords simply stopped working.  This MAY have been what happened to me, but I can't be sure because at the time I was creating new passwords for all my accounts using Keepass, and when I couldn't log into mybitcoin I immediately blamed myself as having fat-fingered the password in Keepass, but I guess I'll never know.  One thing's for sure, they have NEVER answered my emails or messages asking for help.

I lost a LOT more than .5 bitcoins.  As far as I'm concerned, anyone using mybitcoin.com deserves to get ripped off after all of this bad publicity.  The site is a scam.

This.  Any site that wasn't a scam wouldn't not respond to emails like that.  They would help users recover their accounts and coins.

I now wish some of the older members would find alternatives.  Maybe one of the other start ups needs the help of an already established merchant to get their name out there.  This is disappointing, I always thought MyBitcoin was the big game in town.  And I believe it is.  Please someone attempt to represent or defend them Sad

It seems more like an issue of bugs than them purposely trying to steal your money. Someone should make an opensource online wallet?

Either way i don't trust them with the amount of reports I see. And i dont trust any other wallet site either because of fear of "fractional reserve walleting"

I find it pretty appealing that I don't have to secure my own wallet, as this is a non-trivial manner (and I'm not even a complete security noob).  Sometimes its easier to trust a 3rd party (that has a working history) than worry about it yourself.  Also I think its kind of ridiculous to expect them respond to emails claiming "forgot my password", if they haven't registered an email with the site.  The option of having no reset option is also nice as it removes a huge potential for unauthorized account access.

I think that is all we are looking for out of this thread, a 3rd party to actually trust.

All you say is that you "lost a lot more than .5bitcoins", but you never give details. That doesn't help your credibility, especially after I don't know how many people asked you to say HOW MUCH you lost.

For now you are just ONE MORE troll, like so many around here that scream scam at the first sign of trouble...

EDIT: Just found this in the Newbies board
Hi, I actually wanted to reply to this thread : http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=26224.60 to say that I have also had a coin disappear at Mybitcoin, but as I don't post on the forum much, I'm limited to the newbie section (if someone could move or quote this over there that would be good). I pulled all my coins out of mybitcoin when I noticed the missing coin, but I still have access to my account, and I correctly received mining payouts both before and after the missing coin (I didn't catch it immediately). The coin shows up in the block explorer here: http://blockexplorer.com/address/1HgDuxLfG3E4kkN5VkToxeFPDN2aWBTjPz . It's easy to spot as it's the 1.01 coin one as opposed to an even 1.00. So, I know that the pool payed out on time to the correct address, but my mybitcoin account balance did not increase. I can't really prove it to the general public, but there is no record of the coin ever arriving at mybitcoin, so it's not a case of my account being compromised by a third party. That should be easily verifiable by someone at mybitcoin. I've sent two support tickets using the messaging system in Mybitcoin with the latter containing all of the information above. It should be an open and shut case, but I have not gotten any response, and it's been almost 2 weeks since the coin should have arrived and about a week since I messaged support.

Has anyone else had problems with coins disappearing at Mybitcoin or any luck actually getting support?

Now, this is how non-trolls complaint: THEY GIVE DETAILS. Learn from it lettucebee. And before you ask, yes, i did read your thread...

I think that it is unwise to trust any not extremely credible and trustworthy entity with your bitcoin life savings.

However, it might make sense for the sake of convenience to take some counterparty risks and use services such as mybitcoin and others when amount at risk is fairly small.

Agreed.  I just think before this thread, for myself, the line of what was risky with MyBitcoin was a little blurry. It is very clear for me presently.

I lost a LOT more than .5 bitcoins.  As far as I'm concerned, anyone using mybitcoin.com deserves to get ripped off after all of this bad publicity.  The site is a scam.

You and others have demanded more specifics from me, which would satisfy your curiousity, I suppose, but I don't know yet what I gain from attaching myself to a block chain address.  I've been going through a lot of hassle cleaning up my various accounts after the Mt Gox fiasco (from which I learned a lot about account discipline, anonymity, and trust).

Thanks for pointing out the above thread.  I'll see how being specific worked for Alrecenk.  If your complaint is something like "it's not fair to say bad things about mybitcoin without backing it up with specific evidence" that's fair enough; Bitmole has already chewed me out for that.  If I thought putting out that kind of information would help me get my money back, I would do it.  But if it doesn't help me get my money back all I will have done is be compromised yet again.  Is this unfair to mybitcoin?  Perhaps, but if we're talking about fairness they can start by responding to my requests.

But I ask you, where is mybitcoin in this debate?  I welcome Tom Williams, or whoever he is, to come here and accuse me directly of slander and libel.  Does anyone believe he is so busy running his site in his basement that he hasn't heard a peep about all of the bad press he is getting on the #1 bitcoin forum?  The only people who defend mybitcoin appear to be techies who don't like to see a fellow business mis-treated.  But if any of you treated your customers the way mybitcoin has you'd deserve complaints too.  I have been honest about what has happened to me.  I'm just somebody who got interested in bitcoin and bought some.  I didn't ask to get ripped off.  Don't you find it odd and more than a little unsettling that a business who would presumably care about its reputation among this TINY community of bitcoin users sits in stony silence as one person after another comes forward to complain about the same shortcomings?  Why would you ignore the pattern?  Why are you and bitmole so vociferous in your support of mybitcoin?

Just for fun, I'm going to go over to my email and my alternate mybitcoin account to see if I've heard from the mysterious--and apparently well-loved pirate, Tom Williams--to see if he's responded to my pleas.  I've been doing this nearly every day for weeks.

I have heard Instawallet.com mentioned several times. I don't vouch for them nor do I understand their business model, but I share this with you at your own risk.

Avoid them at all costs. They do not respond through the support messaging system and therefore will not be held accountable for any server glitches or mistakes. Server glitches have happened in the past, and undoubtedly will happen in the future, so you're better off getting comfortable with the Satoshi client.

Now, this is how non-trolls complaint: THEY GIVE DETAILS. Learn from it lettucebee. And before you ask, yes, i did read your thread...

I asked Alrecenk how his detailed request has fared. His response:

The only way the coins will be recovered is if someone associated with Mybitcoin recovers them. The post more serves to gather information, warn other people, and maybe help motivate someone to make something better. In that regard I think being specific and polite helps quite a bit, but no, it's probably not going to help get your coins back. I have neither the time nor the will to try to start up a competitor, but I am a computer scientist. My specialties fall more into the realms of physics and AI, but I might be able to help out some with the technical aspects.

Let me repeat the key phrase: "The only way the coins will be recovered is if someone associated with Mybitcoin recovers them."  There's your problem right there!  Mybitcoin has not only ripped off individuals, but it is damaging the reputation of businesses that are using it as a wallet.  Now I understand why certain developers are so defensive.  What other businesses are using Mybitcoin?  I'm making a list.

I've been working on a sort of MyBitcoin competition - bit-bank.org. It's quite similar to MyBitcoin, however I certainly hope it doesn't attain the reputation MyBitcoin has. Smiley

Quite a simple interface - you're able to deposit / withdraw bitcoins, send them (instantly) to other Bit-Bank accounts, etc. Registered users are also given a custom URL - such as bit-bank.org/user/seeARMS for my own - which simply displays your BitCoin address.

If anyone has any opinions / feature requests, I'm all ears. I aim to be as open as possible to avoid the inevitable trust issue.

A shopping cart interface with ready-made modules for the main opensource e-commerce platforms, like prestashop for instance. You would kill mybitcoin in 1 week if you did that Wink

And OpenCart as people using it + the MyBitcoin plugin could easily switch over.

I see the niche that mybitcoin covers as separate from a full-on shopping cart.  Mybitcoin is a very good personal tool for receiving and sending bitcoin.  It wouldn't be so if it had all the functionality of a shopping cart.  An essential element for mybitcoin, though, is a handheld interface.  Does it have this?

P.S. We are getting off the original topic, so let's take this development talk over here:

Will do - I'll begin working on an API tonight and hopefully get it finished relatively soon!

Question:  How much of a fee per transaction would people be willing to pay for a mybitcoin-like service that didn't steal people's money?

Evidently based on our survey regarding flexcoin the majority would.

Does your 'survey' bother to ask if people care about uptime?

Are they down? I just started messing with bitcoins and sent a low 0.05 to them because I thought my wallet wast working. The day after there down? My first bitcoins a failure Sad Any info on this site so I can take my bitcoins out?

Come to find out, I thought I had to wait for like 200000 blocks or so to get my bitcoins to pop up in the wallet and then I read Its way less now and I had the blocks downloaded. So I trans myself 0.000004 and thats all im messing with now. So upset. Guess take the loss and keep trying. Im also thinking of buying some now to give to the users on my site for free. Which I planned long ago just havnt the funds to get them. Most of my funds been going to the site upkeep.

Things are not looking good.  I hope it comes back up today, and I hope you all empty your wallets from their service until they learn how to communicate with people who use their services more than a posting through a forum member in a thread from a month ago ( linked from here http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=32984.0 )

I do love how frantic things are lol "mybitcoin.com's hosting provider is leaseweb.com
you can contact them, or the police saying that mybitcoin.com have stolen your bitcoin
it is likely that they will try to contact the onwer of the site, tom williams." -  http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=33020.0

Yeah, so I had about 25BTC with mybitcoin so, as you can surmise, I am rather fucking angry about this... sorry about your 0.05btc but mybitcoin.com has control over thousands of BTC and if he walks away with all the wallets he will be a rich asshole that deserves a severe beating.

I got 600 BTC that I am on the hook for. So I should be way more angry.

Also, Bitcoin Weekly money that my webzine worked hard to accumulate is in there too.

I will have to take money out of my own pocket to provide for weekly's operation and answer to the people who trusted me with their money.

But I am not angry. This isn't the end of the world. The server might come back. If not, I will do the work necessary so that people who trusted me with their money get their back and that the webzine keep operating.

Learn my lesson and move on.

600 BTC is ALOT, but I believe somebody had much much more (25000 BTC  Shocked) on mybitcoin. I hope it was moved someplace safer since first "mybitcoin scam" threads started popping up.

Unfortunately, you only need one person to run a good secure business and if you are one, you will have poor customer relations.

It will come back online again, just like the previous times it went down.

I just hope it's before my bills are due!

There was a time I had kept over 200 btc on the site. Now I have around 11 btc on there. I'm rooting for a quick return of the site for all of the worried community members.

If it doesn't come back, an investigation will be the first thing we do for the community as the UABCI.

UABCI?

Why care? This forum is open for pretty much everyone to post, which means you'll have a great amount of users filling it up with utter crap.

The amount of troll posts is pretty amazing. Yes, in this post I claim this UABB guy is a troll. Using bitcoins doesnt get easier by having to go through a bunch of middlemen.

Using bitcoins doesnt get easier by having to go through a bunch of middlemen.

And yet...you use bitcointalk.org on a daily basis to find purchases, discuss topics on Bitcoin, etc. Ironic.

If we can reduce or completely remove the potential for fraud in transactions, I'd say it makes things 'better', not easier. Don't you agree?

I do not use this forum on a daily basis, nor do I use it to find purchases. When discussing bitcoin related matters, I do not need to use bitcoins. If you wish to convince me, the last thing you should do is put words in my mouth

If you manage to somehow completely remove the potential for fraud in bitcoin transactions, I congratulate you.
