Hello,

You can measure your loss by calculating it using satoshi, that is why you need to right down your buying point of a certain coin and your selling point. For example you bought it for 50K satoshi each, and you did panic selling when the market bleeds you sold it at 40K satoshis, that means you lose 20% of your initial investment.

(Total sell in ETH) - (total buy in ETH) = your profit in ETH (or loss if has "-")
If you need % then (your profit in ETH) / (total buy in ETH) *100

it depends on what you are planning to go back to.
usually people go back to fiat (eg USD) so your calculations may become a little complicated because you will have to have both the price of what you bought with ETH and price of ETH/USD.

lets say you invest $1000 in ETH then buy some coin with it.
the coin you bought drops 10% so you lose 10% of your $1000 here
then ETH goes down from $1400 to $500 which is a 65% drop which means you also lose 65% of your investment here.

in the end you simply get your remaining ETH and multiply it by the current price and you get the profit/loss. in this case $1000 gets you 0.714 ETH and then after the first loss you will have 0.6426 ETH and the value of that would be $321.3
in other words you lost $678.7 out of your $1000

The guy above made equations with words already, but perhaps with variables and some explanations it would be easier for you to understand.
You bought your coins for x ethereum. Then you sold them for y eth. As the transaction fees on eth are not very high, we could neglect them, but I see that many exchanges have their own withdrawal fees and that is why we should probably include the fee as z. To calculate the profit/loss, you do the following:
y - x - z. Thus you get pure sum you gained. If the sum has the minus then you lost the money. If you want to calculate the profit not in the sum of money but in a coefficient (I mean, 2x, 3x etc) then try this:
x+z = 1
y = q (what you want to know)
q= y/x+z
Good luck!

I think you should choose a coin as an standard.
The Bitcoin or Eth will be good alternatives.
Exchange your altcoin to Bitcoin or Eth,then exchange the
Bitcoin or Eth to US dollar,at last you could get your gain.
Done!

It's best to take a currency your base and calculate everything on its ratio.
For example, Bitcoin is the only currency I buy using fiat and I keep a record of average USD value for my bitcoins.
And all other coins are bought using (mostly) bitcoin and I compare their initial and final value using bitcoin.

There's a free tool from cryptocompare that will do these things automatically using your base currency as USD, Bitcoin, Ethereum and many more options.

I think all of us have a problem with calculating gains or losses with ETH or BTC.

We think of profit and loss against USD but if the amount we gain in USD is less than the amount we gain if we had held onto ETH, the technically
we made a loss.

So I tend to keep track of how much ETH I invested into each ICO or altcoin. So I would benchmark my gains from altcoin against the number of ETH that i can buy back with my altcoins.

Example, If I invest into an ICO or altcoin with 10 ETH.. which is valued at about $8350 at this moment. Then whatever profits I make with altcoins must be able to swap back to more than 10ETH. This is how I calculate my profits.

If my altcoin investment became $10,000 but I can only change to 5.98ETH as ETH value has doubled to $1670, I have just made a loss.

This is how I am looking at my altcoins investments

That’s the problem with purchase or altcoin with ETH
Don’t know if the « reference » coin is ETH purchase price or fiat purchase price in order to determine gain or loss

Use a calculator.
You can try to use the automatic calculator that's on the popular exchanges to get a brief outlook on the profit ratio.

This is the question that is really needed to be answered. If we all manage to do these calculations, the loss will be reduced. I hope this content will be useful for all: https://steemit.com/cryptocurrency/@dogeking/how-to-accurately-compute-your-gains-losses-in-cryptocurrency

When there are many altcoins in the portfolio, it is very inconvenient to calculate the profit or loss for each coin.  I use the application Blockfolio for this.  There you can drive your coins (add quantity and cost at the time of purchase).  And you will see profit or loss in bitcoins,%, dollars or other currency.
