I wish I joined this forum before all merit point system started. Almost on every thread I read about disappointed members regarding to the new ranking bulls...t. It worries my seeing many great posts getting no merits. I have limited knowledge and skills to be able to earn these points and it freaks me out. I know at my level it isn't a must to earn but when my activity points go up I'll need them to rank up. I see newbies even member and higher up asking for help and tips how to work their way up what fustrates me the most how desperate they are with no success. Is it going to be any changes or we got to leave with this merit nightmare???

I wish I joined this forum before all merit point system started. Almost on every thread I read about disappointed members regarding the new ranking bulls...t.
That means you're reading the wrong threads. Go read threads about Bitcoin instead of Meta and Off-topic. You'll learn more if you do that.

It worries my seeing not many posts getting merits.
I see plenty of posts earning Merit. Check Recent merits, and start reading those posts.

You just said you have limited knowledge. Why is ranking up so important to you? (rhetorical question)

The Merit system works the way it's designed to be:
It's too early to get a clear picture, but my thoughts so far:

First, most people complaining about merit are constantly posting garbage, and should not rank-up. The forum is not a welfare system; you don't run through a few hoops and then get paid for doing something that nobody actually wants. I like that good forum members can make money, especially when said forum members are in poorer countries and this is a major opportunity for them. I very much do not want to destroy the sig-ad/airdrop/bounty "industry". But I am not going to tolerate people posting garbage upon garbage.

It's not important at this stage as being said but will be soon. You asking why? Why ppl invest in bitcoin or why playing games? As much as important to build an imaginary or a real character as it is with ranking up within the forum. It's called progression.

This kinda make sense. Although many people have language barriers and unable to post in English. We should take under consideration that there are small countries with little to none activities on this forum with 0 possibility to earn merits. What about them?

Really, what about them? Probably more than 99% of the world's population doesn't understand enough about bitcoin so as to contribute meaningfully to discussions on Bitcointalk. Hence, they won't receive any merit points on Bitcointalk. That's not a problem, that's a solution.

(Edit: And there a lots of local language sub-boards here. Merit can be earned there as well.)

Look at me: I can't stand on a pair of ice skates without falling over. That means I'm never going to win any trophies in ice skating. Can that possibly be anyone else's problem but my own?

It worries my seeing many great posts getting no merits.
I heavily disagree. Almost all (if not all) the good posts/replies I've seen has been given one or more merits.

I have limited knowledge and skills to be able to earn these points and it freaks me out. I know at my level it isn't a must to earn but when my activity points go up I'll need them to rank up.
It's just simply survival of the fittest. In the past people can get to full member or higher just by simply logging in once every day and make one lazy post; hence accounts were easily farmed. The new merit system is one of the best updates made in bitcointalk in my opinion. Now the shit spammers stay where they should be, on Newbie and Jr member ranks.

It's up to your own local community to apply for being a Merit source:
If you want to be a merit source:

 1. Be a somewhat established member.
 2. Collect TEN posts written in the last couple of months by other people that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread. The point of this is to demonstrate your ability to give out merit usefully.
 3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.

I am especially eager to have merit sources in sub-communities such as the local sections.

Rushing to rank up is not in your best interest and that of the forum. You have to
learn the nitty gritties and operational guidelines regulating this platform.Once
you are committed to it and gather all required information, you are set to follow
the systematic design and method of ranking up.In due course, you get augumented
merit points.knowledge is your fundamental requirement to achieving it. Otherwise,
you may derail from the allowed practice.Be guided.

If that would be the way you look at the new implementation, then by any means you don't deserve to rank up if you only complain about how the system is unfair while other countless newbies are trying hard to have their account rank up. The merit system is an experiment to see if spam would be reduced because most members will try to post significant content. I myself am no god when it comes to creating posts, but I always try to be constructive as much as I can and prevent myself from blabbering useless, nonsense post since it wouldn't help me or the forum in any way.

Not all things in this world would be handed to you if that's how you're accustomed to. This is only a forum, yes, but you know so well that posts are also monetized through signature campaigns, and the admins, together with the members don't want this forum to be cluttered with mess from people who only came to pick up pennies and not contribute anything.

It's not important at this stage as being said but will be soon. You asking why? Why ppl invest in bitcoin or why playing games? As much as important to build an imaginary or a real character as it is with ranking up within the forum. It's called progression.

You still haven't answered the question. Progression to what? The progression you're talking about is imaginary if you're just chasing the rank title. Higher rank doesn't allow you to post more? You're a Jr. Member so you can already access all the boards on this forum.

Seriously, why are you so desperate to rank up?

It's just simply survival of the fittest. In the past people can get to full member or higher just by simply logging in once every day and make one lazy post; hence accounts were easily farmed. The new merit system is one of the best updates made in bitcointalk in my opinion.

It's not even survival of the fittest. Someone who doesn't earn merit gets to remain a participant in this forum. Merit is a reward for constructive posts, but it's a very low value reward. What do you really get after you've earned merit? What does the ranking up process bring to someone?

And I agree that it's one of the best updates made in bitcointalk!

The easiest way to level up on rank/merit is to just not try to level up but to think more about why the levels exist.

No forums was setup wanting to have levels but they do really help to keep the level of quality conversations high. Play a part in keeping the forum high quality and then you will be rewarded without expecting it.

p.s my understanding is you don't have to worry about merit until you are a member anyway so just enjoy the learning Smiley

I agree that there's an automatic mental desire to reach the higher ranks. But in reality, as others have said there's not a lot of reason you *need* to.

Sure, there are a few extra features unlocked (like the signature styling options) and members might give you a bit more credibility. But as long as you're making high quality posts and engaging in a constructive discussion, the "rank" you've got doesn't actually matter as much as it might feel.

At least, that's my 2 cents as a low-ranking member at the moment  Grin

Don't worry about it as it is a new feature and will take time to inculcate on this forum. I am expecting the period of 6 to 12 months to see the use of it by most of the members. Meanwhile, you can spend your time in reading as much as you can and understanding the stuff.

I joined this forum in 2014 and  I still find myself incomplete, fortunately there are many experienced members on this forum and they are always ready to help so forget about the changes and keep going, gain as much knowledge as you can.

I heard that it's quite easy to get Jr.Member because there is no needed merrits..
But as for Member...It seems realy difficult to get merrits because every smart idea was posted several times before by other forum's member Embarrassed Embarrassed

If you’re referring to Bitcointalk, please keep in mind that this is a discussion forum, not a ‘field of business’. The problem in the first place is that too many users view Bitcointalk as a marketplace. Please don’t be part of that problem.
