So basically I bought $200 in BTC a long ass time ago and put it in an Electrum wallet. I tried to send all the BTC to coinbase today but I couldn't becuase the last step was 2 factor authentication or something.

I think I remember doing something with the google authenticator app on my phone when I made the account but I got a new phone so that app is now gone. I tried to redownload the app but obviously it did not work.

This is where shit really hits the fan, I found the 12 word seed in my room and tried to use it to recover the account but the "next" button stays grayed out and unclickable. I have tried different spellings and capitalization.

My question is.. what else can I do? Have I just lost that bitcoin?

The Bitcoin software, network, and concept is called "Bitcoin" with a capitalized "B". Bitcoin currency units are called "bitcoins" with a lowercase "b" -- this is often abbreviated BTC.

You might have confused "day" and "clay" or "word" and "world" or something like that.

Whether it was day or clay, the "Next" button will still be visible after you reach 12 characters. So the problem isn't a mis-typed word.
That's not necessarily true... there are "checksum" calculations done by Electrum making sure you have entered a "valid" seed with "valid" words etc... If you've mis-typed a word, it likely WON'T accept it as a valid seed and "next" will be disabled (unless you select BIP39 from options, which switches off the checksum validation).

I have tried "dog dog dog dog dog dog dog dog dog dog dog dog" (even with double space) and the next button became clickable.
That's because that works out to be a "valid" (old) seed... hence why the next button is clickable...

Change the last dog to "clay" and it'll still be a "valid" seed and next is clickable... now change it to "day" and see what happens Wink

It is quite possible that you've got a 12 word seed from a different wallet and NOT from Electrum. Easy test for this is to create an offline copy of https://iancoleman.io/bip39/ (instructions at bottom of the page) and then enter your 12 word seed into the "BIP39 Mnemonic" box... if it works and generates a bunch of addresses, chances are that it ISN'T an Electrum seed, but is a BIP39 seed from a different wallet.

Alternatively you can attempt a restore again and during the seed entry part after entering your seed click on options and check bip39. Then pay attention to what it says next to the options button. If it says failed checksum then it's not a bip39 seed mnemonic.

Is electrum actually calculating BIP39 checksums now? If so, that's cool... it didn't use to do that as far as I remember... it would just use whatever you typed in and generate a seed.

EDIT: I see that it DOES calculate the checksum as Abdussamad said and says "Checksum OK" or "Checksum Failed"... and will still let you go ahead with a failed checksum! ("Next" button is enabled) Wink

Yep it lets you proceed with a failed checksum which is why i said pay attention to what it says there. The reason I posted this was because IMO it's safer to use electrum to do this than a website.
