.
The Bitcoin software, network, and concept is called "Bitcoin" with a capitalized "B". Bitcoin currency units are called "bitcoins" with a lowercase "b" -- this is often abbreviated BTC.

Let's start by the definitions. Because you're talking about three different fields in the business.

1. VPS: this means Virtual Private Server. And it just means a server that is really a virtual machine. So there is no physical server in the rack but the service provider sells you a virtual machine as a service. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_private_server.

2. A TOR Hidden Service is a website which is hosted within the TOR network. Mostly these are websites that are run at home. What you do is install the TOR browser bundle, install a local web server, place your website in it and pass the information to the config file of TOR. The TOR software creates a unique id for it. The all known .onion address. Mostly TOR hidden services are used to host content without revealing the location of the website. And it also means that it is necessary to configure the server to give away as little information as possible because this information could be a fingerprint to your location. As you can read, this is a very different world. I don't know if this is applicable for your situation? This is really all I know about this item.

3. Owning domains is relatively simple and is only needed when you host a public website. It's not needed for TOR since TOR uses it's own system to publish your site, .onion adresses. Registering a domain can be done at every provider. Providers often sell packages with hosting and one or more domain names included.

One note on hosting, there is shared hosting and dedicated hosting. Dedicated means owning your own server. This can be a physical one or a virtual machine. That is item 1 in the list, making the circle complete.  Smiley

TOR is not a scripting language. It is an anonymity network.

As answered above, TOR is just a way to get content delivered to your PC (anonymously hopefully).

As the network can be relatively slow and tedious from time to time, I'd recommend a general design that requires little/no scripts, does not rely on low latency (or continued communication at all) and that ideally also allows the user to authenticate you and to ensure the integrity of the information you send (e.g. a SSL certificate, doesn't have to be from a public CA).

Hi there! I don't know how much you are willing to spend here, but a simple VPS shouldn't cost you that much. For instance you could check https://www.transip.eu/vps/pricing-and-purchase/ for great Holland-based VPS services or http://www.hostgator.com/ for an US-based one.

VPS management is usually easy, as providers try to make customers feel as cozy as possible. There might be some general rules/tips on VPS management, but I'm sure your provider of choice will be able to inform you about everything you need to know (it's their job anyway  Tongue)

Next, you can't really operate a domain - that's just and address which you are able to point wherever you want to. So, say you purchase a VPS plan and a domain (http://www.godaddy.com excels at it), you can link your domain with your VPS's IP address so that people can query your server (web, mail, whatever) through the domain you just purchased. That should be also quite easy to set up, specially since both the domain name provider AND the VPS provider are surely able to give you instructions on how to set it up properly for your particular requirements.

Finally, .onion domains are quite different from regular ones. They're free to get and manage, but a little difficult to set up. I'd suggest you read the Tor project documentation here https://www.torproject.org/docs/tor-hidden-service.html.en. If you want to host a Tor Hidden Service (i.e. a website within the Tor network) you can either use your own machine or a VPS as the host computer. I'd advise you to stay away from APACHE server software if you want your website to be secure and really hidden, since APACHE is a large chunk of code with many possible holes/vulnerabilities. Instead, use something like Savant or thttpd. The rest of the info is well explained at the TOR documentation linked above.

If you still need help on setting up the VPS/domain/server/savant/TOR/ whatever just PM me for more details. I'd be great to know a) whether you have Tor/Tor bundle browser or anything like that installed and b)your main OS.

Hope my help is useful, and good luck on your project Cheesy

Cheers!

The first question is what do you want?

If you just want a website, you don't need a VPS. You don't need one either if you want to run a TOR hidden service.
PM me to say what's your plan, and I will reply with the best solution.

Ok, so here I go:

TOR = Anonymity/Proxy Network.
.onion = Hidden service on TOR.
DNS = Domain Name System ie. bitcoin.org -> 204.232.175.78

To use a domain name you need to:

1. Buy the name from a registry.
2. Configure the domain registry to use your DNS name servers. If your don't have nameservers try cloudns.net (easy, simple).
3. Configure DNS name servers records. You will need to add an A record to your hosting IP address.
4. Configure webserver to accept requests from whateveryourdomainnameis.com.
5. Check out your new website!

For .onion's:

1. Install TOR
2. Edit torrc file to have a hidden service on port 80 (or whatever port)
3. Configure web server to accept requests from youroinion7386jfgyf398d3.onion.
4. Check out your new hidden service!
5. This assumes a VPS, normal webservers are much harder if not impossible to run a hidden service on.

This is just a basic summary. Feel free to post with more details and I'll be happy to help! Smiley

1 Download a Web server. This is usually necessary since Windows doesn't come with a default Web server. Apache is a good program, but you can also download ABYSS, which is a free program that you can download (see Resources).

2 Read the documentation that is included with ABYSS to familiarize yourself with the program. This is only necessary if you've never used ABYSS, or if you do not have Apache on your system.

3 Visit the No-IP website (see Resources). Set up an account while you are on this page. Choose the domain name you want to use.

4 Download the No-IP client. Click on the Windows operating system download. Download the program and then install it.

5 Fill in the information the program asks for. Make sure the program runs after installing it. Once all of your information is entered, your IP address will resolve to the domain you chose, which should be something like xxxxxx.hostnameofserver.com (where xxxxxx is the name you chose).
