An alt coin is just an "alternative coin" to bitcoin. Bitcoin is easier to access and has more merchants, exchanges, hardware, and software to support it. Bitcoin is significantly more liquid, with a much larger market cap than any altcoin.

The Bitcoin software, network, and concept is called "Bitcoin" with a capitalized "B". Bitcoin currency units are called "bitcoins" with a lowercase "b" -- this is often abbreviated BTC.

Bitcoin is the first crypto coin.

"Altcoin" is any other coin. All coins are alt-coins except Bitcoin.

altcoin always depends on the price of bitcoin. Like bitcoin is king, also altcoin is the commoner. bitcoin decreases then altcoin will also decrease.

I think some top altcoins are gradually starting to get independence from BTC. Not like they are completely independent, but their exchange rates start to follow the BTC less over time
