Globally, ‘the unbanked’ lack access to basic financial services that many take for granted. This is evident for many developing and third world nations. Without access to the basic forms of financial services, the unbanked are generally subjected to high levels of interest rates for credit and generally unfavourable terms as financial institutions request greater levels of security/guarantees.
The Hidden Potential of Livestock
Livestock is the lifeblood of the ‘small scale’ agricultural industry providing economic wealth to farmers through the cultivation of everyday commodities including milk, hide, wool, meat and even fuel which also can be obtained from livestock. Furthermore, with livestock’s ability to reproduce, the economic value of this ‘dead capital” can be far greater than currently realised.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nation’s report on World Agriculture, growth in the livestock sector has consistently exceeded that of the crop sector — the total demand for animal products in developing countries is expected to more than double by 2030. Currently the unbanked lack access to the tools to unlock further economic potential of their livestock which could be used to produce, secure, or guarantee greater value from the financial economy. There are a number of challenges smallholder farmers face when in comes to having access to traditional finance to save, borrow and protect against loss due to their irregular income.
